Draft-Eligible HBCU Student-Athletes to Showcase Talent on National Stage

NBCU Academy – a Journalism Training and Development Program – to Offer HBCU Students Professional Development Opportunities and Hands-on Media Experience

STAMFORD, Conn. – Dec. 15, 2022 – NBC Sports presents the HBCU Pigskin Showdown college football all-star game live this Saturday, December 17, at 1 p.m. ET on Peacock and CNBC. This is the first time NBC Sports is showcasing this event.

Taking place at Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., the HBCU Pigskin Showdown provides a platform for draft-eligible student-athletes to showcase their talent to a national audience and perform in front of NFL scouts. The game features Team Selma vs. Team Marion, with the teams comprised of players from Jackson State, Howard, Southern, Florida A&M, and more. The inaugural HBCU Pigskin Showdown in 2021 featured 84 top HBCU players competing in front of scouts from 16 NFL teams.

NBC Sports’ Chris Lewis will handle play-by-play and will be joined by analyst Anthony Herron and reporter Corey Robinson.

Through NBCU Academy – a journalism training and development program designed to prepare college students and young professionals for careers in the news and media technology industry – NBC Sports will present select students from HBCU institutions with the opportunity to cover the event for NBCSports.com.

The HBCU Pigskin Showdown is one of three  NBC Sports presentations of college football games highlighting HBCU universities this season, including the Toyota HBCU New York Football Classic, which was played on Sept. 27, and the Bayou Classic, which was played on Nov. 26. This year marked the most-watched Bayou Classic on NBC Sports since 2014 with a TAD of 729,000 viewers.
