Texas A&M (Women), Arizona State (Men) Claim No. 1 Seeds for Team Match Play Semifinals (Tuesday, 3-6 P.M. ET on GOLF Channel)

Women’s Semis: (1) Texas A&M vs. (4) UCLA; (2) Oregon vs. (3) Auburn  Men’s Semis: (1) Arizona State vs. (4) Pepperdine; (2) Texas vs. (3) Vanderbilt

ATLANTA, (Oct. 24, 2022) – Texas A&M’s Blanca Fernández García-Poggio fired a 2-under 70 to claim women’s medalist honors at the East Lake Cup. Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, reigning NCAA Individual National Champion, earned the men’s individual crown with a 4-under 68.

Fernández García-Poggio was the first Aggie out and opened with two quick birdies in her first three holes. The highlight of Fernández García-Poggio’s round was a seven-hole stretch between Hole Nos. 8 and 14 which the senior played in a clean 5-under. Despite a tough finish, the Spaniard held on for her second-career individual victory and propelled Texas A&M to the No. 1 seed.

“It’s cool, the course is amazing and it’s so pretty,” Fernández García-Poggio said. “It’s just amazing.”

Sargent put together a bogey-free front nine with birdies on Hole Nos. 5, 6 and 7. After a bogey on the 11th hole, Sargent rebounded to birdie the 12th and 14th. He finished with a 4-under-par score of 68, the best of any player in the field.

“I didn’t drive it great, but I just kind of stayed in position all day,” Sargent said. “I hit my irons pretty solid and just did a good job of staying below the hole and giving myself good looks… I didn’t hit a great shot on (No.) 11, but other than that, played really solid.”

The East Lake Cup is being contested over three days, following the format from the final three days of the NCAA men’s and women’s golf national championships. Tuesday (tomorrow) and Wednesday, Oct. 25-26, two match-play tournaments will be hosted simultaneously for the men’s and women’s divisions, with the semifinals taking place on Tuesday and the finals and consolation matches on Wednesday.

Teams for the East Lake Cup are competing on the championship golf course at East Lake Golf Club, home of the TOUR Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs. The East Lake Cup benefits the East Lake Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping families build better lives and children reach their highest potential through its holistic approach to community revitalization incorporating mixed-income housing, cradle-to-college education and community wellness. The East Lake Cup is one of the largest contributors to the East Lake Foundation, having raised more than $1.5 million for the East Lake Foundation since the tournament’s inception in 2015. ZipRecuriter, World Wide Technology, Full Swing, and Bridgestone Golf are official partners of the East Lake Cup.
