Known for His Legendary “GOOOOOL!” Call, Cantor to Serve as Soccer Play-by-Play Commentator at His Fifth Olympics

Tokyo Olympics Soccer Competition Kicks Off Wed., July 21 on the Networks of NBCUniversal

STAMFORD, Conn. – May 24, 2021 – Telemundo Deportes’ Andres Cantor, the legendary fútbol announcer who is being inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame this fall, will call soccer matches in both English and Spanish at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics, it was announced today. Cantor, the only announcer to call Olympic soccer in both languages, will handle play-by-play for select matches in English in Tokyo.  This summer’s Olympic soccer competition begins Wednesday, July 21 on the networks of NBCUniversal.

Captivating fans with his in-depth knowledge of the game, unique phrases and legendary GOOOOOL! call, Cantor returns this summer for his fifth Olympic assignment calling soccer matches – including the men’s and women’s gold-medal games – for Telemundo Deportes. This summer will mark his second time calling Olympic soccer matches in English (2000 Sydney Games on the networks of NBCUniversal).

“Andres’ exciting play-by-play style and unforgettable goal calls are widely known by viewers, regardless of their native language. We are thrilled to have him join our English-language presentation,” said Rebecca Chatman, Vice President and Coordinating Producer of NBC Olympics production.

“Andres’ love of the game and dedication to its growth in the U.S. comes through on every one of his calls,” said Eli Velazquez, Executive Vice President of Sports Content for Telemundo Deportes. “We are excited to see that he will be able to deliver his knowledge, passion and emotion to more fans of the beautiful game in both languages during the Olympic Games.”

“I am humbled and honored to join my excellent colleagues from NBC Sports in announcing games in English and I hope to bring my passion and love of the game to what will surely be a memorable tournament,” Cantor said.

Cantor joined Telemundo in 2000 and serves as the lead play-by-play announcer for Telemundo Deportes. A six-time Emmy Award winner who has been covering soccer for more than 30 years, he has called eight FIFA World Cup tournaments on television and radio, and two FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments on television.
