HOCKEY CULTURE SEASON TWO

Pittsburgh Penguins President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke joined NHL on NBC analyst Anson Carter for a conversation about LGBTQ+ advocacy in hockey, his family’s role in the You Can Play Project, and the progress that the NHL has made in inclusion, on the latest episode of NBC Sports’ Hockey Culture.

The conversation is available now on Hockey Culture’s dedicated YouTube Channel and below are highlights:

Burke on the state of inclusion in the NHL: “I believe the NHL has made tremendous progress in the area of diversity and inclusion…for the first time in my adult life, I have hope we are going to solve some of these issues…we’ve got to get to a point where everyone feels comfortable — no matter what they do for a living, where they go to church, what color their skin is, who they go to bed with — that they feel comfortable and included.”

Burke on the stigma around homophobia: “This is not a door you kick in. This bias, hatred and prejudice is built up over centuries. We’re not going to wake up one day and homophobia is gone…we’re nowhere near 100%, but I’ve seen such positive progress that I’m encouraged.”

Burke on how to support the LGBTQ+ community: “If you want to support the LGBTQ+ community — write a check, march in a Pride parade, join a gay straight alliance…you’re not really supporting the community unless you’re helping and taking an active role. Be a part of the solution.”

OUR LINE STARTS

NHL on NBC analysts Anson Carter and Dominic Moore joined NBC Sports’ Kathryn Tappen with reactions to the flurry of moves made at the trade deadline, and the impact that the moves will have the remainder of the season, on the latest episode of NBC Sports’ NHL weekly podcast, Our Line Starts.

OFF THE ICE

On the latest episode of Off the Ice with Kathryn Tappen, Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers discusses the role that his father helped in him pursuing his hockey career, how he modeled his game after Detroit Red Wings former star Pavel Datsyuk, and details how he is making an impact in the local Edmonton community.
