STAMFORD, Conn. – Feb. 17, 2021 – NBC Sports presents the NHL Outdoor Games at Lake Tahoe this weekend on NBC, beginning with Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche facing Mark Stone and the Vegas Golden Knights Saturday at 3 p.m. ET, and Kevin Hayes and the Philadelphia Flyers against David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins in a clash between East Division leaders Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. Both games will take place on the 18th fairway of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort Golf Course.

Mike Tirico will call both games this weekend alongside Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Brian Boucher (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst). NBC Sports’ Rutledge Wood will serve as an on-site reporter in Lake Tahoe. It will mark Tirico’s outdoor NHL game play-by-play debut.

NBC Sports is synonymous with NHL outdoor games, having co-founded the NHL Winter Classic and televised 11 NHL Stadium Series matchups. Since its inception in 2008, the NHL Winter Classic telecasts on NBC represent the most-watched single NHL game telecasts on record.

Prior to Sunday’s game, NBC Sports will show the premiere of Doc Emrick – The Voice of Hockey, Presented by Discover – detailing the illustrious career of U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member and eight-time Sports Emmy Award winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick – at 2 p.m. ET on NBC leading into coverage of Bruins-Flyers. Emrick announced his retirement late in 2020 following a 47-year career broadcasting professional hockey, including the last 15 as the lead play-by-play voice for NBC Sports’ NHL coverage. Following are highlights of NBC Sports’ Lake Tahoe coverage:

  • Unique production elements headlined by a pair of drone cameras and the absence of crowd noise, enhancing both the natural sounds on the ice and picturesque outdoor Lake Tahoe setting;
  • Features starring Rutledge Wood centering on the local ambience of Tahoe, including reliving Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Sakic’s memorable hole-in-one at the 2011 American Century Championship, joining local youth hockey players on skates at a rink, and taking a snowmobile adventure;
  • Essay penned by Emrick on the 1960 United States Olympic gold-medal winning hockey team;
  • NHL on NBC host Kathryn Tappen, who has participated in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Resort Golf Course, will appear on Golf Today on GOLF Channel tomorrow.

The Lake Tahoe matchups are part of NBC Sports’ presentation of Frozen February, a month-long celebration of hockey and digital and social content centering on the intersection of race and diversity in the sport as part of Black History Month.

NBC Sports, in conjunction with Sports USA, will broadcast the NHL Outdoor Games at Lake Tahoe on NBC Sports Audio channel 211 on SiriusXM, and will be available on more than 50 radio stations across the country. John Ahlers and Brian Hayward will call the matchups, while Ted Sobel will serve as host during pre- and post-game and intermissions.


NBC Sports is scheduled to present roughly 100 games featuring all 31 teams on NBC and NBCSN during the 2020-21 NHL regular-season, including a record 16 regular-season games on the NBC broadcast network. Click here for more info.
