STAMFORD, Conn. – Oct. 22, 2020 – When NFL passing leader Russell Wilson and the NFC’s only unbeaten team, the NFC West-leading Seattle Seahawks (5-0), visit 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Kyler Murray and the NFC West second-place Arizona Cardinals (4-2) this Sunday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., it will mark NBC Sports’ sixth NFL broadcast from the Pacific Time Zone in 2020 – setting an NBC Sunday Night Football record for most Western games in a single season.
Earlier this afternoon, the NFL announced that it had moved Seahawks-Cardinals to NBC Sunday Night Football in place of Buccaneers-Raiders.
Seahawks-Cardinals is the sixth game in the first seven weeks (eight games) that NBC Sports will broadcast from the Pacific Time Zone – topping the prior full-season high of five such telecasts set last season and in 2014.
NBC will broadcast a seventh Western game in Week 11 (Nov. 22), when Patrick Mahomes and the Super Bowl-champion Kansas City Chiefs visit the Las Vegas Raiders. Flexible scheduling could also add Pacific Time Zone games.
“The famed 19th Century editor, publisher, and politician Horace Greeley is generally credited with uttering the phrase, ‘Go West, young man,’” said NBC SNF play-by-play announcer Al Michaels. “Just took a little while for it to hit home.”
The seven such Pacific Time Zone-based telecasts is the most for the NFL’s broadcast primetime package since 1985, the year before Michaels began his career as the voice of the NFL in primetime with ABC’s Monday Night Football. In 1985, ABC MNF broadcast 21 primetime games – 16 on Monday nights and five on other nights. Seven of those games were played out West. There was only one primetime NFL package until the 1987 season.
Michaels, in his record 35th season as the voice of the NFL’s premier primetime package, calls Seahawks-Cardinals alongside 16-time Emmy Award-winner Cris Collinsworth, and three-time Emmy Award-winning sideline reporter Michele Tafoya. Three-time Super Bowl referee Terry McAulay is the Sunday Night Football rules analyst.
Mike Tirico will host Football Night in America at 7 p.m. ET alongside Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy, two-time Super Bowl champion Rodney Harrison, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, and NFL Insider Mike Florio. Liam McHugh will co-host FNIA on-site from State Farm Stadium.
