Earlier today, Hockey Culture debuted an interview with Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi commentator Harnarayan Singh as part of the initiative, led by Anson Carter, dedicated to bringing equality and inclusion to the sport of hockey. Among the topics that Singh and Carter discussed were Singh’s Sikh and Canadian heritage and fighting prejudice to pursue his dream job as a hockey commentator. Highlighted quotes from the conversation are below:

Harnarayan Singh on hockey’s impact growing up as a kid in Alberta: “It became a conversation starter. I don’t think I knew it at the time, but eventually…all my relationships and rapport with my teachers and classmates, I really feel that my situation would have been drastically different had it not been for the game of hockey.”

Singh on his dream job of becoming a hockey commentator: “I told people this was my dream…as I grew up, there were so many different situations where people would caution me and say ‘Harnarayan, you have to be realistic, nobody looks like you on TV, the chances of you getting on TV are so slim’…I’m so grateful and I feel so blessed and lucky to say that it happened for me. Despite a ton of obstacles and what I went through in childhood in terms of racism and bullying, I also received a lot of support.”

Singh on recent efforts to promote inclusion in the sport of hockey: “Everything matters and it is so important to relay the message that we are all one. Humanity is together. It doesn’t matter how we look on the outside, on the inside, we’re all the same species.”
