WOMEN’S FREESTYLE HIGHLIGHTS

The U.S. women had their most dominant showing in world championship history at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships, as Adeline Gray, Tamyra Mensah-Stock and Jacarra Winchester claimed three titles. Gray became the first U.S. wrestler, male or female, to win five career world championships titles when she claimed the gold at 76kg and defended her title win from 2018.

Mensah-Stock, who narrowly missed the Rio Olympics, won the 68kg title by beating Olympic bronze medalist Jenny Fransson of Sweden. Winchester won the gold medal in the non-Olympic 55kg weight class.

MEN’S FREESTYLE HIGHLIGHTS

2012 Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs won his seventh world championship medal in the 74kg weight class in his seventh world championship appearance. He lost in the semifinal round to Russia’s Zaurbek Sidakov before defeating Japan’s Mao Okui for bronze.

2016 Olympic bronze medalist J’Den Cox won his second straight world title at the non-Olympic 92kg weight class. He became the second U.S. man to win an Olympic or world title without surrendering a point in more than 30 years, joining Kyle Dake who achieved the feat in 2018.

2016 Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder won his fourth straight world championship medal in the 97kg weight class. After losing in the semifinal round against Azerbaijan’s Sharif Sharifov, he rallied to win bronze. Snyder has reached the podium in every world championship or Olympic Games since 2015.

In the non-Olympic 79kg weight class, Kyle Dake won a second straight world title. He defeated Azerbaijan’s Jabrayil Hasanov in the final, a rematch of the 2018 gold-medal match.
