First INDYCAR Race to be Shown in Primetime on NBC

STAMFORD, Conn. – June 6, 2020 – NBC Sports presented the first race of the 2020 NTT INDYCAR Series tonight on NBC, as five-time series champion Scott Dixon took the checkered flag at the Genesys 300 from Texas Motor Speedway in the network’s first-ever primetime INDYCAR race.

NBC Sports’ lead INDYCAR broadcast team of play-by-play voice Leigh Diffey and analysts and former drivers Townsend Bell and Paul Tracy called the race from Texas Motor Speedway, along with veteran pit reporters Marty Snider and Kelli Stavast.

Following are excerpts from tonight’s NTT INDYCAR Series Genesys 300 on NBC:

Dixon to pit reporter Marty Snider in victory lane: “Such strange times right now, and I just can’t thank the team enough, it’s such a team effort…huge thanks to everybody involved, and bummed that the fans weren’t here – I wish everyone was here to celebrate.”

Diffey on impact of protests and COVID-19 to open Saturday’s broadcast: “Over the last week, the nearby communities here, like so many across America and around the world, including a large gathering today in Washington, D.C…New York City…Philadelphia…San Francisco…and of course, this is all in the wake of the protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd. And INDYCAR’s season debut also comes as the nation still copes with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, so there are no fans permitted in the stands for this event tonight.”

Tracy on Dixon: “He’s like a robot. He’s like a machine that just gets things done. Championships, wins, laps led, endurance races – the guy is incredible. What a career – it just doesn’t look like it’s going to stop.”

Diffey as Dixon took the checkered flag: “How about this for a special piece for a INDYCAR history here in Texas? The driver known as ‘Super Tex,’ the legend A.J. Foyt, won at least a single INDYCAR race in 18 different seasons. Guess who’s about to equal that right here, right now? Scott Dixon, as he comes to the checkered flag, wins at Texas to kick the season off!”

Bell: “An untouchable Scott Dixon tonight.”

Tracy on Ryan Hunter-Reay: “The drive of the night is Hunter-Reay. He started off the race two laps down with penalties and un-lapped himself twice to finish in eighth. That’s a fantastic drive.”

Bell: “There are literally hundreds of little, instantaneous and critical decisions that you have to make to win here at Texas. Dixon made all the right calls here all night long.”

Diffey on Dixon’s teammate Felix Rosenqvist, who wrecked while in second place with 11 laps to go: “Felix Rosenqvist had driven remarkably tonight and the frustration is evident.”
