STAMFORD, Conn. – May 8, 2020 – NBC Sports will present the 2018 Olympic women’s hockey gold medal game between the U.S. and Canada at 3 p.m. ET this Sunday on NBC, highlighted by an interview between NBC Sports’ Kathryn Tappen and Team USA captain and three-time Olympic medalist Meghan Duggan. Throughout the conversation, Duggan discusses her memories of the gold medal game, reflects on Mother’s Day as a mom and daughter, and honors her own mother, Mary Duggan, who is a nurse helping fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
NBC’s broadcast will also feature a special profile on American star forward Hilary Knight, as well as a Mother’s Day tribute essay penned by seven-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick.
Following are excerpts from Tappen’s interview with Duggan:
Duggan on recently becoming a mother to son, George: “It’s the best. It’s the most emotional, exciting, incredible experience of my life. It’s been amazing.”
Duggan on the influence of her mother, Mary Duggan, throughout her life: “My mom’s my hero. It makes me a little emotional. She’s a rock. She’s an incredible woman and I love celebrating her every Mother’s Day.”
Duggan on her mother being a nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic: “She’s out there every day helping patients. (It’s) something that scares me, her being out there (on the front lines), but when I asked her about it, her response was, ‘This is my job, I want to be helping people and I love being a nurse.’ It shows how selfless she is, and what a role model she has been for me my whole life.”
Duggan on Team USA’s rivalry with Canada: “I’m super proud to be part of Team USA … when you have a rivalry like that, that withstands the ups and downs of so many years and stays consistent and drums up so much excitement from fans, it’s an incredible thing to be a part of.”
Duggan on re-watching the 2018 Olympic gold medal game recently for the first time: “So much emotion … my hands were sweating. I was on the edge of my seat the whole game. It was really fun to relive and feel those memories again.”
