International Team Captain Ernie Els speaking with GOLF Channel’s Steve Sands following Day 2

Ernie Els – “Yeah it is perspective, isn’t it. I have to look at where we are. It is easy to look at where we could have been as it was looking really unbelievable. Historically, we have lost a lot of foursomes matches against this side. We tied this morning and this afternoon, so we are in a very good position.”

Els (on message to the team) – “This is the beast that sometimes bites you. You want to put a spear in it, but sometimes it fights back, and that is the nature of this Cup.”

Els – “The big picture is what it is. I am just looking at my guys. I just want my guys to play as good as they can and get the best results as they can. That is all I kept thinking and can hope for. This was probably good what happened the last couple of holes so that the guys can understand what can happen in the Cup. Saying that, we are in the lead. The Americans played wonderfully on the 18th hole. All credit to them. They stuck to it and they grinded. My guys learned a lot this afternoon. We won’t make this happen again. But, saying that, they made great putts and great birdies, and that is why they are champions.”

On Day 2 at the Presidents Cup

Paul Azinger – “It has been a remarkable showing by the International team so far. Ernie Els has done a great job creating an environment for them to be successful. So far so good, but they have a tall order ahead. The momentum I feel has completely shifted to the American team.”

Azinger – “The momentum, even though they tied that session, has to go to the Americans. I think that is going to be a big jolt of confidence and will energize that team.”

Dan Hicks – On a Friday when it looked like the U.S. team was going to get steamrolled, they turn it around.”

Azinger – “Every captain has a responsibility to create an environment to allow his players to be successful. He [Els] showed up here with seven players that have never seen this course. In their preparation, he put an Aussie with every group. Ernie Els has taken the bull by the horns and has said flat out, ‘this is how you are going to play this hole, and this is how you are going to play that hole.’

Justin Leonard – “Ernie Els hasn’t made any wrong decisions so far in his pairings. The way he has put players out, everything he is touching is turning to gold.”

Terry Gannon – “This is pretty remarkable big picture wise. So many people coming in saying this isn’t going to be competitive and wrapped up by Saturday night. They didn’t mean the International team.”

On Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods defeating Byeong Hun An/Hideki Matsuyama 1UP

Paul Azinger – “It is a team event, but it feels like you putted to win a golf tournament if you are Justin Thomas.”

Dan Hicks – “Yep that’s a putter dropping moment for Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods.”

Azinger – “Where else do you get that kind of emotion. What a putt.

Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods speaking with GOLF Channel’s Steve Sands following the match

Justin Thomas – “I’m speechless. I’ve been fortunate to make a lot of big putts and a lot of big shots. But to do it with my captain and an unbelievable teammate to win the match and hopefully turn the tide at the Presidents Cup, that was awesome.”

Tiger Woods – “We were just competing. We were just fighting. We got into our own little bubble, doing our own little thing. We were up early, they flipped it on us. And then we were fighting and clawing our way back. Then JT steps up there and pours it in. It gives me chills. Absolute chills.”

On Louis Oosthuizen/Adam Scott defeating Dustin Johnson/Matt Kuchar 3&2

Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott speaking with GOLF Channel’s Steve Sands following their match

Louis Oosthuizen – “Trying to hit fairways and greens and put pressure on them. I think with the greens, pars are good. You don’t really have to do a lot more, but we had a good stretch in the middle where we started finding our games and didn’t make a mistake.”

Adam Scott – “It’s been really great, especially today. I think maybe some people took the day off of work to come out and watch the golf which has been fun. They have been fantastic for us this week and we look forward to tomorrow and this weekend.”

On Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay defeating Adam Hadwin/Joaquin Niemann 1UP

Paul Azinger – “As a player in this situation that Cantlay was in on the final hole, making that putt this is like winning a golf tournament.”

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay speaking with GOLF Channel’s Jerry Foltz following their match

Patrick Cantlay – “Ours was a hard-fought match today. We needed to flip the script a little bit. We need to get going and hopefully that point on the board gets a little fire with these guys and we finished strong.”

Xander Schauffele – “I had a great partner. We understand each other’s games and I just fed off of him. At no point were we down on each other. We just fed off of each other and hung in there all day. It was a tough day and we were just happy to get that point up there.”

Abraham Ancer/Marc Leishman defeating Webb Simpson/Patrick Reed 3&2

Paul Azinger – “Ancer is the secret weapon. Not so secret anymore.”

Mark Rolfing – “Ancer has been remarkable today.”

Gary Koch – “Six birdies on this golf course in this format will win every time.”

Abraham Ancer and Marc Leishman speaking with GOLF Channel’s Steve Sands following their match

Marc Leishman – “We played a few practice rounds together. Been working well. I feel like if I can get it on the green, he will make the putt. It is a pretty nice feeling.”

Abraham Ancer – “I feel like I hit a lot of fairways and just play very simple golf. The putter has been working nicely so that has been helping a lot. Been making some good putts that have counted a lot and keeping the momentum going. That has been the key to this week.”

On Gary Woodland/Rickie Fowler TIED Sungjae Im/Cameron Smith

Terry Gannon – “Im is some player. He is going to be something. Already is.”

Paul Azinger – “This guy (Im) has hit laser beams at the flag. Has been more accurate than a GPS.”

Notah Begay – “Im has lived up to the billing tee-to-green today. His driving has been stellar and most of his iron shots have been right on the money.”
