STAMFORD, Conn. – Dec. 9, 2019 – The top two teams in the National Hockey League will take center stage on NBC Sports’ Wednesday Night Hockey this week, when David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins visit Alex Ovechkin and the league-leading Washington Capitals this Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

Action will shift west for the second half of the night’s doubleheader at 9:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, when Nathan MacKinnon and the surging Colorado Avalanche host Claude Giroux and the Philadelphia Flyers.

NBCSN’s NHL coverage this week begins tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. ET, when Jack Eichel and the Buffalo Sabres host Ryan O’Reilly and the Western Conference-leading St. Louis Blues.

In addition, NBC Sports will present a Top 15 college hockey series this weekend with exclusive live streaming coverage of the No. 15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions. Friday’s 7 p.m. ET matchup will stream on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app and also be televised live on NBC Sports Philadelphia and NBC Sports Chicago+. The second matchup of the series will stream live on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.

Kathryn Tappen will host Wednesday’s coverage on NHL Live alongside analysts Patrick Sharp and Keith Jones and NHL insider Darren Dreger. Tomorrow night’s studio coverage will be hosted by Tappen alongside analysts Sharp and Jones.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOCKEY – BRUINS-CAPITALS AT 7 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

In a matchup between the top two teams in the NHL, the league-leading Capitals (22-4-5) host the Atlantic Division-leading Bruins (20-4-6) on this week’s Wednesday Night Hockey. The game features the top two goal scorers in the league, with David Pastrnak (25g) and Alex Ovechkin (20g) facing off. Both teams enter the week having won eight of their last ten games, and the Caps are currently on a six-game winning streak. The teams are both in action tonight, with the Capitals hosting the Blue Jackets, and the Bruins playing the Senators in Ottawa.

Seven-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, who is in his 15th season as NBC Sports’ lead NHL play-by-play commentator, U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk and ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst Brian Boucher will call Bruins-Capitals from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOCKEY – FLYERS-AVALANCHE AT 9:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

The Flyers (17-8-5) have won seven out of their last 10 games and are coming off a 4-3 victory over the Senators. Jakub Voracek (6g/15a) has seven points in the last seven games for the Flyers. Goaltender Carter Hart has won four straight starts.

The Avalanche (19-8-2) rank second in the league in goals scored with 107 and are led by Nathan MacKinnon’s (18g/27a) 45 points. The team is currently on a six-game winning streak, following their 4-1 victory over the Bruins on Saturday, and host the Flames tonight.

Chris Cuthbert will handle play-by-play duties alongside Emmy Award-winning ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst Pierre McGuire at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.

TOMORROW – BLUES-SABRES AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

The Western Conference-leading Blues (18-7-6) have five players that have recorded more than 20 points, led by David Perron (12g/17a) who has 10 points in his past 10 games. St. Louis is coming off a 5-2 loss against Toronto on Saturday. The Sabres (14-11-6) earned a 3-2 overtime victory against the Oilers last night, as center Jack Eichel (18g/24a) extended his career-high point streak to a league-leading 13 games with an assist.

Play-by-play commentator Brendan Burke and Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will call the action from KeyBank Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

COLLEGE HOCKEY – NO. 15 NOTRE DAME VS. NO. 7 PENN STATE – ON NBC SPORTS PHILADELPHIA, NBC SPORTS CHICAGO+ AND STREAMING AT 7 P.M. ET ON FRIDAY; STREAMING AT 6 P.M. ET ON SATURDAY

In a battle of two top-fifteen ranked teams this weekend, the No. 15 Fighting Irish (8-6-2) will return to Big Ten play with a home series against No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions (12-5-0). Notre Dame senior forward Mike O’Leary and freshman forward Trevor Janicke are tied for the team lead in goals scored, with seven apiece. The Nittany Lions most recently defeated Michigan 3-1 on Saturday, and improved to 7-3 in Big Ten conference action.

Tony Simeone (play-by-play) and Notre Dame alumnus Conor Clingen (analyst) will call the matchup on Friday night, and Simeone and current Notre Dame student Austin Rooney (analyst) will have the call on Saturday night from Compton Family Ice Arena in Notre Dame, Ind.

Roenick on the Bruins: “They have the best line in the NHL … goaltending seems to be really strong. Even when they seem to be down in games, they come back and win. This team seems to have no fear. So poised and resilient.”

Roenick on the possibility of Pastrnak scoring 50 goals in 50 games: “Everything has to go perfectly right … with as good as Pastrnak, Bergeron and Marchand are, the way they play together, they know where everyone is … (it’s) very, very likely if he stays healthy, he’s got a good shot at doing it.”
