WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – August 4, 2019 – Chase Elliott won the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at The Glen at Watkins Glen International this evening on NBCSN, registering fifth career win, and a back to back win at the legendary road course.

NBC Sports presented today’s race “Radio Style,” with announcers positioned from vantage points around the track. Today’s assignments were:

  • Main broadcast booth – Rick Allen and Daytona 500-winning crew chief Steve Letarte
  • “The Esses” – Veteran MRN and Sirius XM announcer Mike Bagley
  • “The Inner Loop” and “The Carousel” – Racing legend and two-time Daytona 500 Champion Dale Earnhardt Jr.
  • Turn 6 – Twenty-one-time Cup Series race winner Jeff Burton

Serving in their customary race day roles, NASCAR on NBC pit reporters Marty Snider, Kelli Stavast, Dave Burns, and Rutledge Wood contributed coverage from pit road.

The following are highlights from this afternoon’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race coverage on NBCSN:

Allen on Elliott’s win: He’s just the 5th driver to win back to back races at The Glen.

Earnhardt Jr. on Elliott’s win: He’s becoming a veteran right here in front of us. I think that’s as much pressure you can put yourself in as a driver. Being chased down by a champion who has been amazing at the road course the last several years, and he didn’t make one single mistake.

Allen on leading laps: We mentioned 80 laps lead, that’s the second most laps lead ever by a driver. Chase Elliott really put on an incredible performance for everyone.

Letarte on Elliott’s win: I didn’t think he could repeat or even improve on last year performance, those closing laps were so breathtaking, but Martin Truex Jr. held him to perfection again today.

Allen on Elliott’s win: 80 laps lead today of a 90-lap race, gets his second win this season, what an impressive run Chase Elliott has put together. This really has become his best race track.

Burton on last laps of the race: Chase Elliott is going to have to stay aggressive. I know you don’t want to make a mistake but if you’re not aggressive, that will force you in to making a mistake, and Truex will be there… to win this race Chase Elliott has to tackle this last lap not protect.

Earnhardt Jr. on the pressure of the last 5 laps: It’s almost impossible not to make mistakes, these guys are the elites.

Allen on last 5 laps for Chase Elliott: Pressure greater on the 9, trying to put perfect laps together. He’s lead 75 laps already.

Burton going in to lap 5: The goal now for Truex, equal out when you go through the Esses, don’t lose ground, just try to equal out with him.

Letarte on Chase Elliott: A year ago it was Chase Elliott looking for his first career win. This would be career win number 5, can he hold off the charging Martin Truex with seven laps to go.

Letarte on Kyle Busch’s race: It’s been anything but smooth. The issues started early, spinning out heading in to turn one, and then contact with the 24, and this last incident right here (contact with Bubba Wallace) that sent the 18 down into the corner.

Letarte with 27 laps to go: Listen, priorities. You have to stay on track, we’ve seen grass on the grill, if you go off at this point, everyone’s good on fuel you can’t have to make an extra pit stop.

Letarte on the Inner Loop: The Inner Loop has been THE place for issues this weekend.

Earnhardt Jr. on flat-spotting: We’ve seen a lot of a lot of problems this weekend with guys flat-spotting tires. That’s Ryan Newman, probably did flat-spot a tire, that could change the balance and the handle of that car. It just won’t work as well with the front end flat-spotted right front tire.

Burton on William Byron retaliation: We’ve heard this before, you hear the crew chief get mad and tell the driver to react….. you gotta let the driver handle it how he feels is best, if not you can walk into a fight that you end up losing.

Letarte on Kyle Busch and William Byron: When you come to a road course you have issues with the same people every time. Right here, the 18 of Kyle Busch, this seems harmless to me, he gets underneath the 24 of William Byron, I thought it was no harm no foul. I don’t think Kyle Busch likes it, a few laps later he sends the 24, we saw him go through the grass, we weren’t sure how he got there, he got sent by the 18.

Allen on stage 1 results: It’s Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin finished second, Martin Truex Jr, Kyle Busch…..  Jimmie Johnson needing those stage points finishing in 6th, Kyle Larson, Erik Jones, Kurt Busch and Aric Almirola rounding out the top 10 in stage 1. Chase Elliott right back where he was.

Burton on Kyle Busch regaining position on lap 11:  Bush is exceptionally fast, fastest lap on the race track, with that last lap. He’s trying to make that ground up.
