SAN JOSE STATE TAKES ONE-SHOT LEAD OVER STANFORD HEADING INTO WEDNESDAY’S FINAL ROUND OF THE WESTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE PRESENTED BY TOPGOLF

Stanford’s Isaiah Salinda Leads Individual Competition by Three at 8-under par

Wednesday’s Finial Round Airs Live from 4-7 p.m. ET on GOLF Channel

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., April 16, 2019 – Opening round co-leader Isaiah Salinda (Stanford University) moved ahead of the pack on Tuesday to take a 3-shot lead at 8-under par after the second round of the Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf. Meanwhile, with two of its players in a tie for second at 5-under par, San Josè State University continues to take advantage of ‘home field’ at Pasatiempo Golf Club by leading the team competition at a combined 1-under par 699, one shot ahead of cross-county rival Stanford University. GOLF Channel will air Wednesday’s final round live from 4-7 p.m. ET.

“We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing,” said San Josè State men’s golf coach John Kennaday. “Tomorrow is a great opportunity to get some time in a situation that we haven’t been in all that much. We’ve been in it a few times. This is a great opportunity to learn.”

“It was a team effort,” said Stanford men’s golf coach Conrad Ray. “We’ve been talking all year about how important our depth will service us down the road this year. That spoke today. We had a nice contribution by all the guys.”

Salinda, a senior at Stanford, turned in a 2-under par 68 on Tuesday to lead the individual competition by three over four players at -5: San Josè State junior and first-round co-leader Sean Yu (1-over 71 on Tuesday); San Josè State senior Kevin Velo (4-under 66 on Tuesday); Pepperdine junior Clay Feagler (2-under 68 on Tuesday) and USC senior Cameron Henry (1-under 69).

San Josè State, the host institution for the Western Intercollegiate, has the most team victories in the tournament’s storied 73-year history with 12, the last coming 25 years ago in 1994. Stanford is second in team victories at 10, the last coming in 2016.

Taking place at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz., Calif., the Western Intercollegiate is a 54-hole stroke play event featuring an elite field of 13 teams, including two of the world’s top-ranked amateurs in Justin Suh (USC, No. 1) and Collin Morikawa (University of California, No. 4).

The individual medalist at the Western Intercollegiate receives the coveted blue jacket, honoring legendary Pasatiempo Golf Club course designer Alister MacKenzie, also the designer of Augusta National Golf Club.

In total, players who have competed in the Western Intercollegiate account for more than 350 PGA TOUR victories and 40 major championships, including past participants Tiger Woods, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Tom Watson, Steve Stricker, Roger Maltbie and Duffy Waldorf.
