STAMFORD, Conn. – December 10, 2018 – Seven-time world champion Caeleb Dressel, three-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy, and 100m backstroke world record holder Kathleen Baker are expected to compete for the U.S. this week in the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China. NBC Sports’ live coverage of the event begins tomorrow at 6 a.m. ET on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA.
TV coverage continues on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA and NBCSN through Sunday, Dec. 16. Preliminary sessions will stream on OlympicChannel.com and the Olympic Channel app every night this week, starting tonight through Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET. Jason Knapp calls the action, joined by analyst and three-time Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines from Hangzhou.
Dressel won seven gold medals at last year’s World Championships, tying Michael Phelps for the most gold medals at a single World Championships. He is expected to compete in four individual events this week. Murphy will compete in all three backstoke events, while Baker will swim in a team-high five events, including the 100m backstroke, in which she currently holds the long-course world record.
Other notable Americans competing include six-time Olympic medalist Matt Grevers, two-time Olympic medalist Leah Smith and two-time U.S. champion Michael Andrews.
Unlike the traditional World Championships which are held in the summer in a 50-meter pool, this meet takes place in a 25-meter pool. Due to the shorter lap distance and increased number of turns, the 25-meter pool typically yields faster race times.
All coverage on NBCSN will stream on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app. All coverage on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA will stream on OlympicChannel.com and the Olympic Channel app, in addition to NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.
