ALBANE VALENZUELA (STANFORD), VIKTOR HOVLAND (OKLAHOMA STATE) WIN INDIVIDUAL STROKE PLAY AT 2018 EAST LAKE CUP

Stanford (Women), Duke (Men) Claim No. 1 Seeds for Team Match Play Semifinals (Tuesday, 3-6 P.M. ET on Golf Channel)

 Women’s Semifinals: (1) Stanford vs. (4) Alabama; (2) USC vs. (3) Arizona

ATLANTA, Oct. 29, 2018 – Albane Valenzuela (Stanford, junior) and Viktor Hovland (Oklahoma State, junior) claimed individual stroke play honors on Day 1 of the 4th annual East Lake Cup. Both turned in scores of 4-under par 68.

“I think I stayed very patient the entire round,” said Valenzuela. “Didn’t make putts on the first seven holes and then I had a good birdie on 8 I believe, so that gave me some really good momentum. Just very patient. Had a good up and down on the 11th and then just finishing with an eagle on 18. That was huge.”

“I think I’ve just kind of found my game a little bit,” said Hovland. “Not trying to do anything too fancy when I’m out there. I can kind of go crazy when I try to do too much. So, it’s like ok, try to hit the green, try to hit fairway and make some putts and usually a good score. Just trying to make things simple.”

The East Lake Cup is being contested over three days, following the format from the final three days of the NCAA men’s and women’s golf national championships. Day 1 consists of an individual stroke play competition to determine the individual champion and to seed for two days of match-play competition. The final two days of the competition feature two match-play tournaments hosted simultaneously for the men’s and women’s divisions, with the semifinals taking place on Tuesday and the finals and consolation matches on Wednesday.

Teams for the East Lake Cup are competing on the championship golf course at East Lake Golf Club, home of the TOUR Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs. The East Lake Cup benefits the East Lake Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping families build better lives and children reach their highest potential through its holistic approach to community revitalization incorporating mixed-income housing, cradle-to-college education and community wellness. The East Lake Cup has raised nearly $1.5 million for the East Lake Foundation since its inception in 2015.
