STAMFORD, Conn. – October 8, 2018 – Alex Ovechkin and the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals host Marc-Andre Fleury and the Vegas Golden Knights in a rematch of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final on NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Hockey. Wednesday night’s coverage begins with NHL Live at 7 p.m. ET, followed by puck drop from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., at 8 p.m. ET.
This week’s NHL coverage on NBCSN begins tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET, as Claude Giroux and the Philadelphia Flyers host recently-acquired Erik Karlsson and the San Jose Sharks. Pre-game coverage begins with NHL Live at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Kathryn Tappen will host Tuesday’s coverage on NHL Live alongside analysts Eddie Olczyk and Anson Carter. Tappen, Keith Jones, Carter and NHL insider Bob McKenzie will host studio coverage on Wednesday.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOCKEY – GOLDEN KNIGHTS-CAPITALS AT 8 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
The Capitals and Golden Knights clash on Wednesday Night Hockey for the first time since last year’s Stanley Cup Final, when Ovechkin and the Caps defeated Vegas in five games to capture Washington’s first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
The Washington Capitals scored a combined 13 goals in their first two games of the year, highlighted by a 7-0 rout of the Boston Bruins on opening night on NBCSN on Oct. 3. Caps RW T.J. Oshie leads the team in both goals (three) and points (five), while the Capitals rank tied for second in the NHL in goals (13). In their first meeting since the Second Round of last season’s playoffs, Washington was defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins, 7-6, in overtime on Thursday.
Vegas’ season-opener was spoiled by Philadelphia as part of NBCSN’s doubleheader last Wednesday, as Giroux and the Flyers defeated the Golden Knights, 5-2. Vegas followed suit with a 2-1 shootout win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday in the first leg of a five-game road trip. LW Max Pacioretty, who was acquired via trade during the offseason, scored the game-tying goal in the third period. RW Erik Haula netted the game-winner in the shootout to give the Golden Knights their first win of the season.
Six-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, who returns for his 14th season as NBC Sports’ lead NHL play-by-play commentator, U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk and ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst Pierre McGuire will call Golden Knights-Capitals from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
SHARKS-FLYERS – TOMORROW AT 7 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
Flyers RW Wayne Simmonds scored twice in Philadelphia’s season-opener against Vegas last Wednesday, as the Flyers defeated the Golden Knights, 5-2, on the road as part of NBCSN’s Opening Night doubleheader. The Flyers lost to the Colorado Avalanche, 5-2, in their second consecutive road game on Saturday.
Defenseman Erik Karlsson’s debut with the Sharks ended in defeat against the Ducks last Wednesday, as Anaheim scored three goals in the third period to defeat San Jose, 5-2. The Sharks bounced back two nights later, besting the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, in overtime. LW Evander Kane, in his first full season with the Sharks, scored his second goal of the year in the first period, while teammate Kevin Labanc netted the game-winner in extra time. San Jose was shutout 4-0 by the New York Islanders on Monday.
Kenny Albert (play-by-play) and Keith Jones (analyst) will have the call of Sharks-Flyers from Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
