NBC Sports’ 4K HDR Coverage of Notre Dame Football Appears Exclusively on DIRECTV

STAMFORD, Conn. – September 28, 2018 – In addition to its traditional high definition presentation of all Notre Dame Football home games, NBC Sports is delivering 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) coverage of every Fighting Irish home game, in Dolby Atmos® immersive audio, exclusively for DIRECTV customers during the 2018 season.
NBC Sports’ 4K HDR coverage of Notre Dame Football is delivered live, as a companion presentation to NBC Sports’ high definition coverage on NBC, and features the same on-air commentators, camera angles and graphics. NBC Sports’ 4K HDR coverage of Notre Dame Football is distributed to DIRECTV (Check local listings for channel information).
“We have collaborated with Sony on a design that allows us to shoot with a single truck to simultaneously deliver both HD SDR and 1080p HDR coverage,” said David Mazza, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, NBC Sports Group and NBC Olympics. “Through a combination of 1080p HDR and 4K HDR cameras, we are able to better convey the compelling sights and sounds of Notre Dame Football, and enhance the viewing experience.”

NBC Sports’ previous 4K presentations include two Olympics Games (Rio 2016 and PyeongChang 2018), Premier League, the 2016 Notre Dame Football on NBC season, and Telemundo’s coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
HDR delivers a higher dynamic range of brightness and allows for a Wide Color Gamut (WCG) presentation, which allows viewers with the 4K HDR capabilities of new consumer displays to experience a deep, rich color spectrum.
To further enhance its 4K HDR Notre Dame Football coverage, NBC Sports’ is creating a 10-channel audio mix with the help of both Dolby and Linear Acoustic. An array of overhead “height” mics are added to the traditional 5.1 surround sound mix to provide a truly immersive listening experience which is delivered to the consumer as Dolby Atmos®.
