VIDEO: Champion Golfer of the Year – Francesco Molinari

Francesco Molinari (8-under, winner) speaking with NBC Sports’ Steve Sands following his win
Francesco Molinari – “Today was a different kind of golf. I missed a few shots, but I got up-and-down pretty well from everywhere. Incredible to go bogey-free on a course like this.”
Molinari – “A lot of things pop up in your mind, but you need to erase them and focus on what you can control and what you can do. I felt ready for today before the start. I knew it was going to be tough. I thought everyone was going to struggle a little bit and I could use it to my advantage… And that putt on the last [hole], I’ll never forget.”

On Molinari
Johnny Miller – “He was just amazing at getting it up-and-in this week. Tremendous performance. He played like a champion.”

On Xander Schauffele (6-under, T-2nd)
Miller – “He caught me by surprise when he won the TOUR Championship. But he’s the real deal… He has wonderful composure. He just takes it, sort of like a Tom Watson. Just takes whatever comes his way and doesn’t complain. Doesn’t get rattled.”
Gary Koch – “When you watch him play, there are no glaring weaknesses. He’s just really solid at every aspect.”
Roger Maltbie – “He had that bad stretch in there… Other than that he played pretty well… It just wasn’t meant to be today.”

Tiger Woods (5-under,T-6th) speaking with Sands following his round
Tiger Woods – “This links golf is something else. You’re going to get some quirky bounces, and hopefully they go your way for the week… The way Francesco played today was beautiful.”

On Woods
Miller – “There’s no reason he can’t start winning again. Absolutely no reason.”

Jordan Spieth (4-under, T-9th) speaking with NBC Sports’ Jimmy Roberts following his round
Jordan Spieth – “I’m actually very pleased with my week. I’ve come from a place that I wasn’t sure how long it would take me to get back with my golf game earlier this year. Just trying to grind stuff out. Just giving myself an opportunity was good this week. Obviously disappointed having a share of the lead and really only needing to shoot par. But I love every aspect of my game right now. I feel like it’s going the right direction. I think it’s going to be a strong end of the year. I just didn’t get the right bounces today, and sometimes that happens.”

On Spieth
Koch – “There were a lot of questions marks coming [into the week] about his putting. He didn’t have many problems until today.”
