PFT’S CHAREAN WILLIAMS WINS DICK MCCANN AWARD GIVEN BY PFWA
Williams is First Woman Ever to Win the Award
STAMFORD, Conn. – June 12, 2018 – ProFootballTalk’s Charean Williams, a veteran NFL reporter of 25 years, has won the Dick McCann Award presented by the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA), the association announced today. She is the first woman ever to win the award.
Williams, who originally joined PFT in June of 2017, is the 50th McCann Award winner and the first NBC Sports writer to receive the honor. The McCann Award is given annually to a reporter who has made a long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage. The award is named for Dick McCann, who was the first director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1962-67).
“When you look at the list of previous winners and the other nominees, I feel honored and humbled,” said Williams. “‘Wow’ was my first response. Winning the Dick McCann Award means I have done this a long time; I hope it doesn’t mean I’m old. I have plans for many more years and many more stories.”

Williams has covered the NFL for 25 seasons, including 17 with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and six with the Orlando Sentinel before joining PFT last summer. She was the first woman to serve as a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame (12 years), and became the first female president of the Pro Football Writers of America in 2009. In total, Charean has covered 24 Super Bowls as well as seven Olympic Games.
A 1986 graduate of Texas A&M, Williams will be honored during the 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony on Aug. 4 in Canton, Ohio.
