NOTABLE QUOTES: GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP (FRIDAY, PRIMETIME)

Notable Quotes – 99th PGA Championship
Golf Central Live From the PGA Championship (Friday, Primetime)
August 11, 2017
Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, N.C.

On Hideki Matsuyama (8-under, T-1st)
Brandel Chamblee – “Typically he looks at great golf shots like most of us look at snap hooks. You know if this guy is [posing] and holding on to the golf club with both hands after a shot, everybody else is in trouble… The train is coming.”
Frank Nobilo – “The last couple of days, he’s one of the best putters in the world… At the moment he has the run of the tables and he got the run of the draw.”
David Duval – “The fact that a player can perform as well he does basically with the weight of a nation on his shoulders…the weight he carries, and the way he performs with that weight on him is as impressive as anything.”

On Kevin Kisner (8-under, T-1st)
Nobilo – “Obviously he’s not the longest player in the field, so a soft golf course does not give him an advantage at all… He had it early on in his career. It’s not that he lost his way, but you’ve got to find your way. And it’s taken a while, and the last four years you’ve seen an incremental growth in his game. Firm conditions –  if we were to get that on the weekend – he would certainly relish that. These [current] conditions are not in his favor.”
Duval – “He recognizes he doesn’t hit it like Jason Day or Brooke Koepka or Dustin Johnson. He has to get it around the golf course in a different fashion. He’s sticking to his proverbial guns. And in these events that’s sometimes difficult to do, especially with the guys out there hitting it so far.”
Chamblee – “Kevin Kisner is not only a great ball striker, he is a smart player… When he was in position, he would stuff it in there. When he was out of position, he played it smart. It was a clinical game of golf that he played.”

On Jason Day (6-under, 3rd)
Duval – “I see a short game that’s revived. I see a putter that’s working better, and I see fire in him. I think he’s kind of tired of not being talked about. Think about how much he talked about being No. 1 and how important it is to [him]. I just think there’s a fire in his belly right now.”
Nobilo – “We completely blew over Jason Day because of the things we’ve detailed about his year. It means that there’s something back in his game. The only thing you can point to is he’s starting to drive the ball long again and a little bit straighter. He’s been hanging out for form for nearly 12 months.”
Chamblee – “He really is all about great scrambling, aggressiveness and a great attitude. Those will carry you a long, long way. But on a golf course like this, you have to be hitting on all cylinders. And he has been.”

On Jordan Spieth (+3, T-46th)
Chamblee – “He’s won two of his three majors being pretty scrappy off the tee. And this golf course doesn’t let you get away with anything… The golf course just held him accountable for every shot.”
Nobilo – “The lack of familiarity with the golf course… there must be a reason why he never chose this to always put on his [schedule]. Players are habitual. You normally try and always go back to a venue that you always play well at… That would perhaps explain the iron play.”
