Debuting Tuesday, January 17 at 7:00 PM CT, CSN’s Chuck Garfien hosts an exclusive one-on-one interview with one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, MARV LEVY. The now 91-year-old Levy, a Chicago native and Pro Football Hall of Famer, spent 17 years as an NFL head coach (12 with the Buffalo Bills) compiling a 143-112 record, earning two UPI “NFL Coach of the Year” honors (1988, 1993), along with being the only coach in league history to lead his team to four-straight Super Bowl appearances (1990-1993). Plus, Levy was an analyst on CSN’s very first season of Bears Postgame Live back in 2004. In this edition of “Inside Look,” Levy discusses everything from his coaching philosophy with the Bills, on never winning a Super Bowl, his rapport with his players over the years, to his secret to longevity, and much more.

Levy on his philosophy with the Bills:
“It is not easy for some people to follow this formula. We decided we would only bring players of high character onto the team. Personality didn’t matter…there might be some real extroverts like Thurmon Thomas, there might be quiet laid back guys like Mark Kelso, but only people with high character. We had a mantra ‘Ability without character will lose.’ That is what made them so special. They never blamed each other. They were so united. They were a fantastic group of guys.”
Levy on never winning a Super Bowl:
“You can’t change it. I think of the good. I think of the resilience of those guys to fight their way back after crushing disappointment, to refocus. I think of the fantastic fans in Buffalo who supported us. I can’t say every single one did. A magnificent group of players and a magnificent group of fans.”
Levy on his star quarterback Jim Kelly:
“Jim Kelly was not just a great football player; he was a tremendous teammate, family guy. Everything about him you have to admire him. Well into charities. I could go on and on.”
Levy on his no-huddle offense:
“I have always believed in simplicity, simplicity. To run our no-huddle offense, we cut our playbook by 80%, (Jim Kelly) could understand it really well and we could get tremendous repetition in practice. We could get fast-paced and great conditioning in a shorter practice time and we could have fresher players who knew what they were doing. Jim loved it and he loved to be in command.”
Levy on his secret to longevity:
“Good exercise, good diet, good family and do what you love doing, not what you are doing because it is going to pay you the most. (How would you like to be remembered?) – Loving my family, loving this country, loving the people in it, loving the game of football, Loving.“
