On Day 1 at the Ryder Cup
Brandel Chamblee – “You really do have to tip your cap to the start the United States had. I don’t know if you’re [captain Love] what do you say to your team, ‘way to go, great playing?’ The last time the United States was 5-3 up on home soil was Medinah. History is a funny thing… It could very well be a blowout by the time this is done, but you really do have to tip your cap to Europe for turning it around.”
Frank Nobilo – “It wasn’t quite Hagler [vs.] Hearns if you want to go there, but it was the next best thing. When you look through it, there’s not a single player today from either side that won two points… I think [a morning sweep] is the one thing that even the captain Davis Love never considered. So I don’t know if that led to what happened this afternoon, but all credit to America in the morning and all credit to Europe in the afternoon with the fight back.”
David Duval – “After everything that’s gone on with the buildup and controversy for a couple years now, if you had told the U.S. team that they’re going to leave the first day with a 5-3 lead, I think you would have taken it and you’d run.”
Nobilo – “The interesting thing I think is that in the morning Europe’s two best teams lost. And in the afternoon America’s two best teams lost. So that’s in the balance again.”

On Darren Clarke’s lineup decisions
Nobilo – “I think he was forced obviously because of the route in the morning that he couldn’t afford to throw out more than a couple rookies. Which is exactly what happened. He just did not have that luxury. He couldn’t afford to lose another session.”
Duval – “The purpose is to win. And you certainly want to expose your players – a Matthew Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood – but it doesn’t mean they’re going to play more than once [prior to singles]. And Darren Clarke does have a problem with that depth on the back end of the team. There’s no reason to panic, but four or five of the European players are going [to play all five sessions].”

On the Fowler/Mickelson pairing in Saturday morning’s Match #1
Nobilo – “I like Team GPS [Fowler / Mickelson]. I just love watching them play. I don’t know where they’re going to hit it. But I know where McIlroy and Pieters are going to be.”
