New Season, Newly Promoted Teams: Middlesbrough

First match: Middlesbrough v. Stoke City, Sat., August 13, 10 a.m. ET

After finishing second in the Championship, Middlesbrough earned promotion to the Premier League and will play in the top flight for the first time since 2008-09. The club went unbeaten in their final 10 matches to secure a spot in England’s top division. After seven straight seasons in the second tier, Middlesbrough enter the 2016-17 campaign hoping to avoid their fourth relegation from the Premier League. Led by Head Coach Aitor Karanka, former assistant to Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, Middlesbrough hope to put their defensive prowess on display.

Located in the northeast of England, Middlesbrough are one of English football’s oldest clubs, having been established in 1876. One of the Premier League’s 22 founding members, Middlesbrough are also a former club of NBC Sports Group Premier League analyst Robbie Mustoe, who made 351 appearances for the club.

“It’s been a while, but the Boro are back,” said Mustoe. “Middlesbrough will be a fun team to watch this season with lots of new players, an intelligent manager, and a fantastic owner in Steve Gibson.”
