RIO DE JANEIRO. – August 7, 2016 – Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history (22 medals, 18 gold), is expected to return to the pool tonight in the final of the 4×100-meter relay. Live coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET on NBC
Phelps was part of the gold-medal winning team in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, won silver in the 4×100 in London in 2012, and a bronze in Athens in 2004.
“Michael holds the key to this relay,” said NBC Olympics swimming analyst Rowdy Gaines, a three-time Olympic gold medalist. “It will go as far as he can take it. My guess is he will lead off and that sets up great momentum or the U.S. will have to come from behind, which is so difficult in this relay. My hunch is he will come through with a great leadoff and get the U.S. in position to win the gold.”
