NBCSN TO PRESENT TELEVISION DEBUT OF “THE LAST GOLD” THIS MONDAY, AUGUST 1 AT 8:30 P.M. ET

USA Swimming-Produced Film Chronicles Stunning Upset by the 1976 U.S. Women’s Olympic Swim Team

The Last Gold Narrated by Emmy Award-Winning Actress Julianna Margulies

Stamford, Conn – July 28, 2016 – NBCSN, in association with USA Swimming, will present the television debut of The Last Gold, a 90-minute special which chronicles the historic performance of the 1976 U.S. women’s Olympic swim team, this Monday, August 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET. Produced by USA Swimming, the documentary will air on NBCSN with limited commercial interruption.

Considered to be one of the greatest untold stories in Olympic swimming history, The Last Gold details the endeavors of the 1976 U.S. women’s Olympic swim team, as it competed against an almost unbeatable East German team, with ties to a state-sponsored doping program. Following a disappointing outcome at the 1976 Montreal Games, in which the East German women’s swim team won 11 of the first 12 swimming events, and the U.S women’s swim team won zero individual competitions, the U.S. women’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay team of Kim Peyton, Wendy Boglioli, Jill Sterkel and Shirley Babashoff rallied together to do as a team what they could not do individually – win gold.

“We are pleased to join with our partners at USA Swimming to share this important and timely story,” said Joe Gesue, Senior Vice President, Production, Olympics, and Executive Editor NBC Sports Group. “The Last Gold recognizes the astonishing determination of the women of the U.S. Olympic swim team with an expertly balanced and compassionate account of their experience at the Montreal Games.”

“This film documents a remarkable story that many people outside the swimming community may not know, but this telling of The Last Gold is an ideal prelude to the Rio Olympic Games,” said Chuck Wielgus, Executive Director of USA Swimming and Executive Producer of The Last Gold. “This topic is as relevant today as it was 40 years ago, and the film honors those athletes from the 1976 Olympic team who kept their focus and believed that anything was possible.”

The Last Gold was directed by 15-time Emmy winner Brian T. Brown and narrated by Emmy Award-winning actress Juliana Margulies. The film premiered during the 2016 LA Film Festival, as one of only 12 documentary films chosen from over 4,000 submissions.
