NBC SPORTS GROUP TO PROVIDE EXTENSIVE COVERAGE OF IIHF WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SIXTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Live Coverage of 2016 Tournament Begins with Team USA-Canada Tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET on NBCSN

Team USA Roster Features Projected 2016 NHL Draft First Overall Pick Auston Matthews and Detroit Red Wings Rookie Sensation Dylan Larkin

All Team USA, Semifinal and Final Round Coverage To Be Streamed Via NBC Sports Live Extra 

STAMFORD, Conn. – May 5, 2016 – NBC Sports Group will present extensive coverage of the 2016 IIHF World Hockey Championship from Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia – NBC Sports Group’s sixth consecutive year covering international hockey’s premier annual tournament.

Live coverage begins tomorrow on NBCSN at 9 a.m. ET, when Team USA faces defending champion Canada to open up pool play in the tournament. NBCSN’s Team USA coverage will be highlighted by a matchup with Finland on Monday, May 9, at 1 p.m. ET, and a showdown with Slovakia on Monday, May 16, at 5 a.m. ET, to close out pool play. Last year, Team USA earned the bronze medal at the IIHF World Championships, defeating the host country Czech Republic in the bronze medal game.

This year’s Team USA roster is highlighted by projected 2016 NHL Draft first overall pick Auston Matthews, and Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin, who finished third amongst all rookies with 23 goals this season. The squad will also include 2015 first-round selections Noah Hanifin and Kyle Connor. Hanifin posted 22 points from the blue line in 79 games with the Carolina Hurricanes this season, while Connor led all NCAA skaters with 71 points and 35 goals in his freshman year at the University of Michigan. NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra will combine to present coverage of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the 2016 IIHF Championship game, which will take place on Sunday, May 22, at 1 p.m. ET.

The results of the IIHF World Championship, along with Winter Olympics ice hockey results, help determine the IIHF World Ranking for top men’s ice hockey teams in the world.
