NBC Sports Group Notes & Quotes: Waste Management Phoenix Open (Third Round)

NBC Sports Group Notable Quotes
Waste Management Phoenix Open (Third Round)
Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016
TPC Scottsdale (Stadium Course), Scottsdale, Ariz.

**Final Round coverage of the Waste Management Phoenix Open begins tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET on Golf Channel, and continues at 3 p.m. ET on NBC**

On Danny Lee (13-under, 1st)
Johnny Miller – “When he got that lead and got three shots ahead… Instead of trying to increase that lead to four or five where it’s sort of his tournament to be won, he sort of let the field some semi close to him. It’ll be pretty interesting to see how he finishes this off. But Fowler’s probably got the best chance to put the pressure on him tomorrow.”

On Rickie Fowler (10-under, 2nd)
Miller – “His time is now. He could be really strong the next few years. He is so confident, and the skill of his game is now at a level where he can take on the other big three.”
Roger Maltbie – “I just love the way he putts. The way he delivers the putter to the ball, the ball just seems to come alive and track very quickly after the strike. I just think he’s a beautiful putter.”
Peter Jacobsen – “I don’t think this kid has ever been uncomfortable in his life. He loves the stages, love the attention. He loves this energy.”
Notah Begay – “He’s got tremendous talent around the greens so he’s able to piece together some good rounds despite not having his best stuff tee-to-green.”
Miller – “He’s so popular so it’s so nice that his game is sort of matched by how he is as a person.”

On the third round pin location on the short par-4 17th hole all the way in the back
Mark Rolfing – “This hole location just screams lay-up off the tee to me. I really don’t see any margin of error with the driver. I think if you laid up with this hole location consistently, you would make better scores.”
Gary Koch – “I would say if you were to put your tee shot in the 90-yard range from the hole, then it’s a fairly large target. But if you put it up just a little too far on the right then you can’t even shoot at the flag stick.”
Miller – “It is the hardest hole location on the course.”

Phil Mickelson (8-under, T-6th) speaking with Sands following his 6-under par round of 65
Phil Mickelson – “[TPC Scottsdale] has gone from an offensive course to more of a defensive course. But it doesn’t mean you can’t make up four, five or six shots because it also means that there’s a lot harder pars out there and there’s some bogeys for the leaders potentially.”
Mickelson – “The front nine there are really a lot of golf fans… They’re watching and they’re interested in the shots. And then you get to the back nine and they’re not to be found, it’s a party scene.”
