STAMFORD, Conn. – November 9, 2015 – Wednesday Night Rivalry travels to the Steel City this week, when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins host P.K. Subban and the league-leading (27 points) Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

This week’s NHL coverage begins tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, when Jack Eichel and the Buffalo Sabres visit Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning. NBC Sports Group will also present live streaming college hockey coverage this Friday at 7:35 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Live Extra when the No. 18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish host the Northeastern Huskies.

Three-time Emmy Award-winning play-by-play commentator Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member and analyst Eddie Olczyk, and Emmy Award-winning ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst Pierre McGuire will have the Wednesday Night Rivalry call from CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. Gord Miller (play-by-play) and Brian Engblom (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will provide commentary of Sabres-Lightning from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.

NHL Live begins 30 minutes prior to this week’s NHL coverage tomorrow and Wednesday. Analysts and former NHL players Mike Milbury and Keith Jones will be in the studio both days, while Kathryn Tappen anchors tomorrow night’s coverage and Liam McHugh hosts on Wednesday. NHL insider Bob McKenzie will join NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Rivalry coverage to provide the latest in-depth news from around the league.

 

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RIVALRY: CANADIENS-PENGUINS – WEDNESDAY AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

This week’s Wednesday Night Rivalry matchup between the Canadiens and Penguins features two of the hottest teams in the NHL. Montreal leads the NHL with a 13-2-1 record (27 points), and has outscored its opponents 59-29 in 16 games, while Pittsburgh (9-5-0) has won nine of its 11 games following its 0-3-0 start. Montreal spoiled Pittsburgh’s home opener on Oct. 13, as Max Pacioretty scored twice in the Canadiens’ 3-2 win. The Canadiens also boast six players (Tomas Plekanec, David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty, Brendan Gallagher, P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov) in the top 25 in points.

Newcomer Phil Kessel leads the Penguins with six goals, and defensively, Pittsburgh has allowed the second-fewest goals (28) in the NHL. Crosby has enjoyed offensive success against the Canadiens in his career, totaling 38 points (17g/21a) in 29 games against Montreal.


SABRES-LIGHTNING – TOMORROW NIGHT AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

Jack Eichel plays his first game in front of a national audience tomorrow night when the Sabres visit the Lightning at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN. Eichel, who was the second overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft, has paid immediate dividends for the Sabres and leads Buffalo with five goals this season.

This is the fourth and final meeting between the Lightning and Sabres this season. Tampa Bay is 3-0-0 against the Sabres, including a 4-1 win on Thursday in Buffalo, and Stamkos has scored a pair of goals against the Sabres this season. Tampa Bay is coming off a 1-0 loss to the Wild in Minnesota on Saturday night, while Buffalo looks to build off a 3-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.


COLLEGE HOCKEY – NO. 18 NOTRE DAME HOSTS NORTHEASTERN ON FRIDAY AT 7:35 P.M. ET ON NBC SPORTS LIVE EXTRA

NBC Sports Group continues its 2015-16 college hockey coverage on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. ET when NBC Sports Live Extra streams a Hockey East matchup between the No. 18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Northeastern Huskies. Notre Dame split a pair of games against Minnesota last weekend, while Northeastern was swept in a two-game set by Boston University.
