Kings Defeat Blackhawks 5-4 in Game 7 Overtime to Advance

Notes & Quotes from Kings’ Game 7 OT Win Against Blackhawks

STAMFORD, Conn. – June 2, 2014 – NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of the Stanley Cup Final begins with Game 1 on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, when the Los Angeles Kings host the New York Rangers at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Coverage begins with NHL Live at 7 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

The Kings advanced to the Stanley Cup Final with a 5-4 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks, as Alec Martinez’s point shot deflected past Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford to send the Kings to their second Stanley Cup Final in three years. With the win, the Kings became the first team in Stanley Cup Playoff history to win three Game 7s on the road in all three series while advancing to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Kings will look to earn their second Stanley Cup in three seasons, after defeating the New Jersey Devils in six games in 2012 for their first ever title. The Rangers aim for their first Stanley Cup title in 20 seasons, when they defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games in 1994 for their first championship since 1940.

Kenny Albert (play-by-play), Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Emmy Award-winner Pierre McGuire (Inside-the-Glass analyst) will have the Game 1 call from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, who will miss Game 1 due to a death in his family, will return for the remainder of the series beginning with Game 2 on Saturday.

Host Liam McHugh and analysts Mike Milbury, Keith Jones and Jeremy Roenick will anchor NHL Live from inside STAPLES Center, while Dave Briggs and Anson Carter will comment from a set outside the arena.

NOTES AND QUOTES – KINGS-BLACKHAWKS WESTERN CONFERENCE FINAL GAME 7

Kenny Albert (play-by-play), Joe Micheletti (analyst), and Brian Engblom (Inside the Glass analyst) called last night’s Kings-Blackhawks game on NBCSN, while NBCSN’s NHL Live studio team featured host Liam McHugh, and analysts Mike Milbury and Keith Jones.

Following are quotes from Sunday night’s Game 7 coverage between the Kings and Blackhawks:

Albert on game-winning goal: “Martinez with a shot – it’s in! The Kings are headed to the Stanley Cup Final. The shot by Martinez deflected and beat Crawford – it’ll be the Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers.”

Martinez to Brian Engblom following game-winning goal: “We never say die. I think someone described us a bunch of cockroaches – we just don’t go way. If that’s our M.O., it’s fine with me.”

Micheletti on the Kings: “The resolve of the L.A. Kings, we’ve talked about so often…they trailed 2-0, then 3-2, 4-3 in the third before scoring late…incredible…a team that never stops. They never lose their confidence.”

Milbury on Kings-Blackhawks dramatic Western Conference Final: “It’s just about as good as it gets for a hockey fan.”

McHugh following the third period: “Let’s be honest – there was pretty much no way this one wasn’t going to overtime.”

Milbury on Kings-Blackhawks: “It’s sad that it’s over, because it was so much fun to watch this thing. It’s sad to think that Chicago has their heads down in the locker room. They have to be inconsolable, and they’ll stay that way for a while. But in time, they’ll realize they were a part of one special series.”

Jones on effect of grueling seven-game series: “Good news for the Rangers that it went to seven games…it gives the Rangers some hope. It was big that it was an overtime game.”

Jones on Kings’ Marian Gaborik, who leads all players in goals in 2014 postseason: “That trade for Marian Gaborik was simply perfect…Gaborik found a way to break through…I’m pretty sure he’ll be looking forward to matching up against the New York Rangers.”
