NBC Sports Group Surrounds the Preakness

NBC Sports Digital will be surrounding the Preakness Stakes with NBC Sports Live Extra, CSNWashington.com and social media.

NBC Sports Live Extra: NBC Sports Live Extra — the NBC Sports Group’s live streaming product for desktops, mobile devices, and tablets — will stream NBC and NBCSN Preakness Stakes coverage, and includes:

• Four online-only isolation cameras, including one on Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome during the race

• Bonus analysis by NBC Sports commentators

• Replays and highlights from the Kentucky Derby and earlier prep races

All Access: Horse racing fans can access content from the Preakness at a “social center” housed on NBCSports.com/Preakness. Fans can access and sort social media content from Instagram, Twitter and Vine through various streams including horse racing experts, horses (including the horses themselves, jockeys and trainers), a photos-only section and Vine videos. Preakness All-Access aggregates what’s trending around the race and what’s hot in the social world. In addition, fans can plug in their first and last names and will be given their ‘Horse Name’ to be shared on Twitter.

Twitter: Viewers and Tweeters alike will be encouraged to join the conversation by using the hashtag #PREAKNESS. Reminders will appear on screen throughout all of NBC’s Preakness coverage.

• On-air integration of live tweets from celebrities, horse racing experts and @NBCSN will be featured on screen throughout the broadcasts to keep viewers up to date with what’s happening on Twitter;

• A Trending Bar will be integrated into the live broadcast coverage to update viewers in real time as to what Preakness related terms are trending on Twitter;

• For the ultimate horse racing fan, @NBCSN will live tweet all week leading up to the Preakness, including the Preakness Draw, and provide interactive trivia and “Did You Know” tweets during the Preakness Classic broadcast. It will give fans behind the scenes access and information like never before.

Facebook: Fans will have the chance to join in on the Preakness broadcast:

• Everyone at home can pick their winner with the “Choose the Winning Horse” Facebook poll on http://www.facebook.com/NBCSports. The nation’s votes will be tallied and shown on-air during the Preakness broadcast.

CSNWashington.com is also focusing the spotlight on the Preakness. Insider Rich Dubroff will be there every step of the race, covering the post-position draw on Wednesday, the Breakfast at Pimlico, the Black-Eyed Susan race and previewing the big race on Friday night and coving the Preakness on Saturday. Check out CSNWashington.com for Rich’s reports, original video and photo galleries of the scene.

Golf Central and LiveFrom THE PLAYERS Fan Voting

Golf Channel introduced a new second-screen experience during its coverage of THE PLAYERS Championship last week. Using an interactive TV platform called iPowow, Golf Channel engaged viewers by inviting them to join the on-air conversation on Golf Channel shows, including Golf Central and Live From THE PLAYERS.

During the shows, Golf Channel talent directed viewers to a special website, http://www.GolfChannel.com/vote, where they could vote on questions posed during live segments, using either a computer or mobile device. After answering the question, viewers then could track results to the second until a final tally was revealed on the air.

One of the questions posed was: “Should THE PLAYERS be considered the 5th Major?” Viewers voted 51% no to 49% yes, but the dynamic voting varied across the nearly 16 minutes Live From featured the question. Golf Channel plans to use this application again in the future.
