Stamford, Conn. – February 15, 2014 – Highlights of Sunday’s coverage of the XXII Olympic Winter Games:
- NBC’s primetime presentation – which begins at 7/6c – features world ice dance champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White in the short dance program; reigning super-G world champion Ted Ligety and 2010 Olympic silver medalist Bode Miller competing for gold in the super-G; top American Lindsey Jacobellis contending for gold in the snowboard cross final; Brittany Bowe competing in the 1500m event in women’s speed skating; and Steven Holcomb attempting to pilot his way to the first U.S. Olympic title in the two-man bobsled.
- Tomorrow’s live coverage on NBCSN begins at 3 a.m. ET with Team USA vs. Canada in men’s curling, and is highlighted by live coverage of Team USA vs. Slovenia in men’s hockey at 7:15 a.m. ET. In addition, NBCSN will feature Team USA’s 3-2 shootout victory over Russia as its Game of the Day, airing at 4:30 p.m. ET. NBCSN’s live Olympic coverage also includes figure skating’s ice dancing short dance.
- USA’s live men’s hockey tripleheader coverage begins at 3 a.m. ET with Austria vs. Norway, followed by Russia vs. Slovakia at 7:30 a.m. ET and Canada vs. Finland at noon ET. MSNBC’s live coverage begins at 5 a.m. ET with Team USA vs. Canada in women’s curling.
Following are highlights from today’s NBC coverage of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi:
Al Michaels on the level of emotion and intensity at U.S.-Russia game: “It felt like Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final…and maybe even ratchet that up a bit. The emotion was tremendous.”
Michaels on the Olympics’ effect on NHL players on Team USA: “There’s something about bringing these guys together, a lot of whom play against each other, putting them on one team, and the Olympic environment creates something just extraordinary.”
Michaels on importance of hockey for Russia at Sochi Games: “If they win only one gold medal in these Olympic Games, and it’s hockey, it’s all worth it.”
Doc Emrick of importance of hockey for Russia: “President Putin had a hand in choosing the coach for the Russian team. We have people involved in high places. It’s great for hockey.”
Meredith Vieira on overnight sensation of U.S. men’s hockey player T.J. Oshie: “As I was leaving [the arena], someone said, ‘If Hillary Clinton plans to run for president, she should have Oshie as her running mate.’”
Dan Jansen on possibility new suits affected prior U.S. speed skating performances: “Most people are pointing towards the suits right now, I’m not so sure we can go there just yet. If you look at the 1500m world cups this season, out of four of them, in the two at high altitude, Shani Davis (finished) first and second. The two at low altitude, (he finished) fourth and eighth.”
Jansen on ramifications of new suits: “If we find out that this is a major issue, and the suits are to blame, I think the most colossal error U.S. Speedskating has made, maybe ever, in not testing these indoors in a controlled environment.”
Jansen following Davis’ 11th place finish in the 1500m: “It looks like the suits might not be the issue after all.”
Davis on changing back to the old suit for tonight’s race: “I think it helped a little bit, but it might not have been as significant…it’s not going to take half of a second off.”
Ted Robinson on the tight finish in the 1500m, as Poland’s Zbigniew Brodka won by three one-thousandths of a second: “I thought short track was crazy…how could you possibly have this happen twice in the same Games, where the gold medal has been determined by everybody staring at the scoreboard waiting for official times?”
Apolo Ohno on Viktor Ahn changing citizenship from South Korea to Russia in order to compete in Sochi: “Such an incredible skater, he’s come such a long way…for an athlete to switch citizenship, change the uniform and flag which they are representing, means that they have to be willing to sacrifice quite a bit.”
