Tuesday in Primetime: Shaun White Aims for Third Straight Gold Medal in Olympic Halfpipe

Stamford, Conn. – February 10, 2014 – Highlights of Tuesday’s coverage of the XXII Olympic Winter Games:
- NBC’s primetime presentation – which begins at 8 p.m. ET – features gold medal final coverage of the snowboard halfpipe headlined by action sports icon Shaun White and the figure skating pairs’ short program as reigning world champions Tatyana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov look to reinstate Russia’s Olympic dominance in the event.
- NBCSN’s programming on Tuesday begins at 3 a.m. ET and is highlighted by coverage of men and women’s cross-country individual sprint gold medal finals, where Alaska’s Kikkan Randall is a strong medal contender in the women’s event. NBCSN will also feature women’s curling with Team USA vs. Russia; live coverage of figure skating pairs’ short program; and live coverage of the gold medal final in women’s ski jumping.
- Live on USA Network at 5 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Team USA takes on China in men’s curling. CNBC’s coverage of women’s curling begins at 5 p.m. ET Tuesday with Team USA vs. Great Britain.

Following are highlights from today’s NBC coverage of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi:
Analyst Cris Collinsworth on two-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White (White will compete in the snowboard halfpipe Tues., Feb. 11 on NBC): “If you push extreme sports too far, sometimes they push back.”
Play-by-play voice Matt Vasgersian on Alex Bilodeau’s two consecutive Olympic gold medals in moguls – the first-ever in freestyle skiing Olympic history: “An amazing moment for the Bilodeau family. It was one of the best images of the Vancouver Games when Alex won Canada’s first gold medal on home soil – did so with the support and inspiration of his brother [Frederic]. And here in Sochi, four years later, he has made Olympic history.”
Bolideau on his brother Frederic, who has Cerebral Palsy: “When I see him, he’s my everyday inspiration. I wake up in the morning, it’s raining outside, I don’t want to go train, I don’t want to ski. I look at my brother, and if he had that chance, he would go, he would grab it. With the motivation that he has, if he was like me, he would be a three-time Olympic champion. I have no doubt about it.”
Analyst and 1998 Olympic moguls gold medalist Jonny Moseley on Canadian freestyle skier Alex Bilodeau’s gold medal-winning super final run: “He just laid down the gauntlet. What a run… His brother is stoked!”
Four-time Olympic medalist Julia Mancuso on becoming the first U.S. skier to medal at three different Winter Olympics after earning a bronze in the super combined (Mancuso will compete in the downhill on Wed., Feb. 12 on NBC): “I don’t even know! I can’t even believe it. It was such a tough slalom… I was just hoping, hoping, hoping when I crossed the finish line that it would be enough to get a medal.”
Analyst and Olympic speed skating gold medalist Dan Jansen comparing track & field and speed skating three-point stances at the starting line: “Similar start, similar position. Skaters actually get to the 100m faster than Usain Bolt, if you can believe it.”
Apolo Ohno on Canadian 1500m short track gold medalist Charles Hamelin (Hamelin is expected to compete in the 1000m and 5000m Thurs., Feb. 13 on NBC): “He is probably the most physically talented skater on the ice right now. He trains harder than anybody. His nickname is ‘The Train.’ I used to call him ‘The Machine,’ because he showed no emotion when he was skating and is very, very, very strong.”
Jansen’s explanation on why 1/100 of a second was added to Dutch skater Jan Smeekens’ time in the men’s speed skating 500m final – putting him in second place after teammate Michel Mulder: “The clock says 34:72 but the photo finish, when his blade touches that line, is the official time and they moved that back 1/100 of a second.”
Alpine skiing reporter Steve Porino on the super combined – the combination of downhill and slalom events: “The primary challenge of the super combined is dealing with the two most disparate disciplines in alpine skiing. On one hand, you’ve got the downhill, the speed and the power required, in slalom, it’s all about quickness and agility.”
NBC daytime host and Dateline anchor Lester Holt: “Today the U.S. women defeated Switzerland 9-0. In the first period, the U.S. scored three goals in a span of just 55 seconds – if you would have blinked, you would have missed it. That’s an Olympic record (Team USA faces 2010 Olympic gold medalist Canada live on Wed., Feb. 12 at 7 a.m. ET on NBCSN).”
