John Strong joined NBC Sports Group as lead MLS play-by-play announcer in July 2013 and calls all MLS games for NBC and NBCSN. Prior to joining NBC Sports Group full-time, Strong called several MLS games in 2012 for NBC Sports Network.
Previously, Strong served as a play-by-play announcer on Fox Soccer, and from 2010-13 was the lead radio and television voice of the MLS’ Portland Timbers after joining the broadcast team in 2006. During his time at Fox Soccer, Strong covered CONCACAF Champions League, U.S. Women’s National Team matches and led play-by-play for UEFA Europa League. Strong’s professional career began in radio with Portland’s KXL, and 750 AM “The Game.” He also produced “The Bald Faced Truth” and hosted “Strong at Night” on 750 AM.
A graduate of University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, Strong was active at Oregon’s campus station KWVA, where he called University of Oregon women’s soccer, softball and lacrosse. He also served as the play-by-play voice for the Eugene Generals Junior Hockey team from 2005-07. Strong began his broadcast career in high school where he founded Laker Broadcasting for Lake Oswego High School and called football and basketball games.
Strong was recently honored as 2013 Oregon Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association. In 2011, his call of a goal by Darlington Nagbe of the Timbers was named Major League Soccer’s “Broadcast Call of the Year.”
Strong and his wife Nicole currently reside in Portland, Ore.
