STAMFORD, Conn. – July 2, 2019 – NBC Sports will present more than 350 hours of live, primetime, and encore coverage of the 106th Tour de France, across NBC, NBCSN, and the NBC Sports Gold app. Daily live coverage of the Tour de France, featuring all 21 stages, begins this Saturday, July 6, at 6 a.m. ET with Stage 1 on NBCSN and NBC Sports Gold. Coverage continues each weeknight at 8 p.m. ET on NBCSN with the Tour Primetime show featuring a look at the day’s most compelling action with new analysis, interviews, and updates. Coverage culminates with the final stage on Sunday, July 28, live at 2 p.m. ET on NBC.

The 2019 Tour de France, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the yellow jersey, will cover a total distance of approximately 2,160 miles, beginning in Brussels in honor of the 50th anniversary of Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx’s first Tour de France victory.  Expected frontrunners in this year’s field include Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (Team Ineos), who returns to defend his 2018 title, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) of Switzerland, who enjoyed a successful spring campaign with victories at Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Critérium du Dauphiné and Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) of Colombia, who clinched the overall victory at the 2019 Tour de Suisse and Paris-Nice.

Phil Liggett, universally known as the “voice of cycling,” will call play-by-play race action for NBC Sports’ coverage alongside analyst Bob Roll.  Liggett and Roll will be joined in France by former professional cyclist and analyst Jens Voigt. Voigt won the Critérium International a record five times and had two Tour de France stage wins. Paul Burmeister will host daily pre-race, post-race and primetime studio coverage, along with former professional cyclist and analyst Christian Vande Velde and American Grand Tour champion Chris Horner, who will be making his Tour de France debut with NBC Sports. Steve Schlanger and Steve Porino (‘Inside-the-Race’) will serve as reporters.

PRODUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

NBC Sports Group will integrate several features into its coverage of this year’s Tour de France:

  • For the first time, NBC Sports debuts a cutting edge “Virtual” graphics Telestrator, which produces augmented reality cyclist graphics for the commentators to move and analyze;
  • NBC Sports honors the 100th anniversary of the yellow jersey this year with several historical features throughout each day’s broadcast;
  • Vande Velde will ride several key stages of the Tour in advance, wearing special raptor sunglasses to preview critical points on the course. On several of these previews, the audience will be presented with onscreen telemetry showing his speed, power and cadence. The raptor sunglasses Vande Velde wears is the same technology used by U.S. fighter pilots in the visors of their helmets, and HD recording of his perspective and data will be used throughout NBC Sports’ coverage;
  • NBC Sports will provide live coverage from cameras mounted on several competitors’ bicycles for the first time;
  • Porino will have a camera focused on him as he reports Inside-the-Race to offer real-time updates on race situations, while traveling aboard a motorcycle on the course;
  • Real-time data of course gradients;
  • 3-D animated maps that track where the riders are in real-time on the route.

NBC Sports Group’s coverage will include real-time speeds of both the leaders and the peloton, and additional maps that show more detailed versions of the finishes and each mountain climb.

NBC and NBCSN will also utilize several production enhancements, including a pointer feature to easily identify and focus on one rider in the peloton, and exclusive profiles and features on teams and riders.
