STAMFORD, Conn. – January 28, 2019 – Steven Stamkos and the league-leading Tampa Bay Lightning will be featured on NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Hockey and on Saturday night in primetime on NBC, highlighting this week’s NHL coverage on NBC and NBCSN, which covers six games in seven days.
Stamkos and the Lightning will travel to Pittsburgh to face NHL All-Star MVP Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday Night Hockey at 8 p.m. ET on NBCSN, and will visit Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers as part of regionalized NHL coverage in primetime on Saturday on NBC at 8 p.m. ET. Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks will visit Zach Parise and the Minnesota Wild as part of the Saturday night regionalized coverage on NBC.
NBC Sports’ Star Sunday Presented by AT&T returns this Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC, when Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals host Patrice Bergeron and the Boston Bruins.
This week’s NHL coverage begins tonight at 7 p.m. ET on NBCSN, when Patrik Laine and the Winnipeg Jets visit Claude Giroux and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers will appear on NBCSN on back-to-back nights when they visit the Rangers at 7:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOCKEY – LIGHTNING-PENGUINS – 8 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
The Lightning (37-10-2) enter the second half of the NHL season leading the league with 76 points, 13 points clear of the closest challenger in the Eastern Conference (N.Y. Islanders, 63 pts) and five points ahead of the Western Conference-leading Calgary Flames (71 points). Nikita Kucherov leads the NHL in points (78) and assists (56), while Brayden Point is tied for second in goals (30).
Pittsburgh (26-16-6, 58 pts) currently sits in fourth place of the crowded Metropolitan Division, trailing the first-place Islanders by just five points. Sidney Crosby took home NHL All-Star MVP honors with four goals and four assists at the NHL All-Star Game on Saturday night on NBC. Crosby leads the Penguins with 57 points this season. Pittsburgh hosts New Jersey tonight.
Pre-game coverage starts at 7 p.m. ET on NHL Live, hosted by Liam McHugh alongside analysts Mike Milbury, Keith Jones and NHL insider Bob McKenzie. John Forslund (play-by-play), U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Emmy Award-winner Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will have the call from PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
LIGHTNING-RANGERS – SATURDAY NIGHT AT 8 P.M. ET ON NBC
The Rangers (21-20-7, 49 pts) are currently nine points behind Pittsburgh for the second Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference. The team entered the All-Star break on a three-game winning streak, including a 3-2 victory over Boston in their most recent game on Jan. 19. Mika Zibanejad scored twice for the Rangers in the win. Kenny Albert (play-by-play) will have the call alongside Olczyk and McGuire from Madison Square Garden in New York. Liam McHugh hosts studio coverage on Saturday night on NBC alongside analysts Patrick Sharp and Keith Jones.
BLACKHAWKS-WILD – SATURDAY NIGHT AT 8 P.M. ET ON NBC
The Blackhawks (18-24-9, 45 pts) enter the week seven points behind Colorado for the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, and wrapped up the first half of the regular season with a 3-2 shootout win against the New York Islanders on Jan. 22. Patrick Kane is currently tied for fifth in the NHL with 71 points.
Minnesota (26-21-3, 55 pts) is third in the Central Division, nine points behind Winnipeg and Nashville. The Wild won three straight games going into the All-Star break, including a 5-2 win against Colorado on Jan. 23. Eric Staal scored twice for Minnesota in the win.
Chris Cuthbert (play-by-play), AJ Mleczko (analyst) and Joe Micheletti (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will have the call from Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
STAR SUNDAY PRESENTED BY AT&T – BRUINS-CAPITALS AT 12:30 P.M. ET ON NBC
Airing most Sundays through the end of the regular season in April, NBC Sports’ “Star Sunday” games will shine a spotlight on a star from each team. The stars selected for each “Star Sunday” will be the focus of pre-game player arrivals and interviews, and will be highlighted in pre-game features and “get-to-know” segments. NBC Sports’ “Star Sunday” game telecasts will include an iso cam on the stars to be utilized for game analysis during intermissions, and scoreboard graphics will let viewers know when these stars are on the ice. This week’s stars are Patrice Bergeron and Alex Ovechkin.
The Bruins (27-17-5, 59 pts) enter the week in the first Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Pittsburgh. Bergeron boasts 41 points (14g/27a) in just 33 games played this season. Washington (27-17-6, 60 pts) is currently second in the Metropolitan Division despite being winless in its last seven games (0-5-2). Ovechkin leads the NHL with 37 goals, seven more than anyone else in the league.
Forslund, Milbury, and Brian Boucher (‘Inside-the-Glass analyst) will have the call from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Kathryn Tappen will host studio coverage alongside Olczyk and Jones.
JETS-FLYERS – TONIGHT AT 7 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
The Jets (31-15-2, 64 pts) are tied with the Nashville Predators for first place in the Central Division. Patrik Laine is tied with Mark Scheifele for the team lead in goals (25). Blake Wheeler leads Winnipeg with 61 points. The Flyers (19-23-6, 44 pts) have won three straight games, including a 5-2 victory over Montreal on Jan. 19. Nolan Patrick scored a pair of third-period goals in the win for Philadelphia.
Albert and Boucher will have the call from Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Pre-game coverage starts at 6 p.m. ET with NHL Live, hosted by Paul Burmeister alongside Jeremy Roenick and Anson Carter.
FLYERS-RANGERS – TUESDAY AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
This marks the third meeting of the season between the Flyers and Rangers. Philadelphia won both prior meetings, including a 3-2 shootout win on Dec. 23. Gord Miller (play-by-play) and McGuire will call the action from New York. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. ET with NHL Live, hosted by Tappen with Roenick and Carter.
