Two-time Olympian Ryan Stassel Leads U.S. Men at the Freestyle Skiing & Snowboarding World Cup on Friday at 12 a.m. ET on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA

STAMFORD, Conn. – December 19, 2018 – U.S. Olympic gold medalists Mikaela Shiffrin and Ted Ligety headline the alpine skiing World Cup this weekend, highlighting NBC Sports’ Olympic coverage this week across NBC, NBCSN, Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, NBC Sports Gold and the company’s various digital platforms.

The alpine skiing World Cup season continues this week with multiple events in Italy, Austria, and France. Shiffrin has already notched five wins this season and currently leads the overall World Cup standings. She will compete in the giant slalom and slalom races in Courchevel, France on Friday, Dec. 21 and Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7:30 a.m. ET live on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA and NBC Sports Gold’s “Snow Pass.”

Shiffrin’s 34 career World Cup slalom wins are tied for 2nd-most all time by a woman, just one behind Austrian Marlies Schild’s record of 35. Shiffrin can equal Schild’s mark in Courchevel on Saturday, and then could go for sole possession of the record on Dec. 29 in Semmering, Austria. The 23-year-old Shiffrin is also two victories away from becoming the youngest skier to reach 50 career World Cup wins across all disciplines.

NBC will present encore coverage of the women’s slalom and giant slalom on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.

On the men’s side, two-time Olympic gold medalist Ligety is expected to compete in giant slalom from Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. Live TV coverage from Austria continues today at 12:30 p.m. ET on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA.

BIATHLON WORLD CUP

The third event of the 2018-2019 biathlon World Cup season takes place in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic this week, and 2018 Olympian Clare Egan and two-time Olympian Susan Dunklee are expected to lead the American women. Egan currently stands as the top U.S. woman in the overall standings, as she earned a career-best sixth-place finish in pursuit at the first event of the season. Two-time Olympian Leif Nordgren is the top American in the men’s World Cup rankings.

Bill Doleman (play-by-play) and Chad Salmela will call this weekend’s biathlon action.

 

FREESTYLE SKIING & SNOWBOARDING WORLD CUP – SLOPESTYLE, HALFPIPE & CROSS

Coverage of the freestyle skiing and snowboarding World Cup seasons continue this week from Secret Garden, the venue in China that will host events at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The U.S. men will likely be led by two-time Olympian Ryan Stassel in slopestyle, and reigning world junior halfpipe champion Toby Miller looks for another podium finish after coming in second at the U.S. Grand Prix in Copper, CO earlier this month.

CYCLO-CROSS WORLD CUP
