STAMFORD, Conn. – December 19, 2018 – U.S. Olympic gold medalists Mikaela Shiffrin and Ted Ligety headline the alpine skiing World Cup this weekend, highlighting NBC Sports’ Olympic coverage this week across NBC, NBCSN, Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, NBC Sports Gold and the company’s various digital platforms.
The alpine skiing World Cup season continues this week with multiple events in Italy, Austria, and France. Shiffrin has already notched five wins this season and currently leads the overall World Cup standings. She will compete in the giant slalom and slalom races in Courchevel, France on Friday, Dec. 21 and Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7:30 a.m. ET live on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA and NBC Sports Gold’s “Snow Pass.”
Shiffrin’s 34 career World Cup slalom wins are tied for 2nd-most all time by a woman, just one behind Austrian Marlies Schild’s record of 35. Shiffrin can equal Schild’s mark in Courchevel on Saturday, and then could go for sole possession of the record on Dec. 29 in Semmering, Austria. The 23-year-old Shiffrin is also two victories away from becoming the youngest skier to reach 50 career World Cup wins across all disciplines.
NBC will present encore coverage of the women’s slalom and giant slalom on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
On the men’s side, two-time Olympic gold medalist Ligety is expected to compete in giant slalom from Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. Live TV coverage from Austria continues today at 12:30 p.m. ET on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA.
