STAMFORD, Conn. – November 5, 2018 – Just three days following the Sunday Night Football clash between Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, NBC Sports presents another battle between two of the greatest players of their generation, when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins visit Alex Ovechkin and the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals on Wednesday Night Hockey at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. ET with NHL Live.
Penguins-Capitals kicks off a Wednesday Night Hockey doubleheader that continues at 10 p.m. ET, when P.K. Subban and the Western Conference-leading Nashville Predators host Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche. Coverage on NBCSN begins Tuesday, as Connor McDavid and the Oilers visit Steven Stamkos and the Eastern Conference-leading Lighting at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Kathryn Tappen will host Wednesday’s coverage on NHL Live alongside analysts Mike Milbury and Keith Jones, and NHL insider Darren Dreger, while Paul Burmeister, Jones and former Blackhawks player Patrick Sharp will be in-studio on Tuesday.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOCKEY – PENGUINS-CAPITALS AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
Two of the most accomplished players in NHL history, Crosby and Ovechkin have combined to win the last three Conn Smythe Trophies for playoff MVP (Crosby – 2016-17; Ovechkin – 2018), and the last six Rocket Richard Trophies for league-leading goal scorer (Ovechkin – 2013-16, ‘18; Crosby – 2017). The Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry intensified during last season’s playoffs, as the Capitals defeated the Penguins in the postseason for the first time during the Crosby-Ovechkin era.
This marks the second meeting this season between the Metropolitan Division rivals. The Penguins defeated the Capitals, 7-6, in overtime in October. Ovechkin scored in the loss for the Caps, while Crosby added two assists for the Penguins. Pittsburgh (6-3-3) hosts New Jersey tonight, while Washington (5-4-3) hosts Edmonton.
Six-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk, and ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst Brian Boucher will have the call from Capital One Arena.
WNH DOUBLEHEADER – PREDATORS AT AVALANCHE AT 10 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
Led by Filip Forsberg, who paces the Predators with 10 goals and ranks first in the NHL in plus-minus, Nashville (11-3-0) sits atop the league with 22 points. The Predators have won three consecutive games by a combined score of 9-2. Nashville has allowed the second-fewest goals per game (2.14), and ranks eighth in goals for (3.36).
The Avalanche (7-4-3) look to snap a three-game losing streak on Wednesday. MacKinnon is tied for the team-lead in goals (11), while teammate Mikko Rantanen leads the NHL in both assists (19) and points (24).
John Forslund (play-by-play) and Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will call Predators-Avalanche from Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
OILERS-LIGHTNING TUESDAY AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN
Through 13 games, McDavid leads Edmonton (8-4-1) in goals (nine), assists (12) and points (21), as the Oilers have won five of their last six games. Edmonton defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, on the road on Saturday. McDavid recorded two assists and Kyle Brodziak scored his first two goals of the season in the win.
The Lightning (10-3-1) have won back-to-back games and pace the Eastern Conference with 21 points through 14 games. Tampa Bay dispatched Ottawa, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday. Led by Brayden Point (17), seven Lightning players have registered at least 10 points.
Rick Peckham (play-by-play) and Brian Engblom (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will call Oilers-Lightning from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.
