On Le Golf National

Nick Faldo – “It is a tough ball-strikers golf course, so you’d love to have two foursomes pairings you thought were fantastic.”

Faldo – “Monday [through] Thursday are the longest four days of the season. It’s an amazing run to go for four days to get ready for the Ryder Cup.”

On the possibility of Woods and Mickelson being paired together this week

Brandel Chamblee – “Nothing would be more compelling to watch, that’s for sure. But in the pantheon of bad decisions, this would be right up there with the 12 publishers that declined the Harry Potter books. It would be right up there with introducing rabbits into the Australian eco-system that turned out to be quite the disaster.”

Frank Nobilo – “I think the Europeans would like to see it. Put it that way… It serves no purpose other than getting people to talk about it. Their differences are immense. One’s a lefty, one’s a righty. Their styles of play, their golf ball. How long a list do you want? And this is about the Ryder Cup, it’s not the Tiger and Phil show.”

Nobilo – “I can foresee the [possibility] that Mickelson may not play on Day 1. You have to put your four best pairings out for four-ball/better ball.”

On which team has an advantage this week

Faldo – “You’re splitting hairs. It’s going to come down to putting. [The United States] are fractionally better, and they’re fractionally better on longer putts… Flip a coin. They’re too well matched.”

On the potential of a Reed/Spieth pairing this week

Chamblee – “The reason they’re a great team together is because they’re so easily overlooked – even dismissed – off the tee. They’re not particularly good drivers of the golf ball. They’re a lot like Seve [Ballesteros] and Jose Maria Olazabal. They’ll spray it, and then they’ll stab you in the heart around the greens. They’ll break down your morale. They’ll destroy your psychology.”
