On Miguel Angel Jimenez, leader at 9-under par (even par 72 on Saturday)

Rich Lerner – “Nobody in golf rocks the aviators quite as well as “The Mechanic.”

Wadkins – “Jimenez has played the front nine just 1-under. Everyone else has made hay on the front nine. On the second nine he is 8-under par. That is completely opposite of what you think would be happening.”

Lerner – “Full range of Miguel Angel’s repertoire today.”

Wadkins – “With everything that happened to him early in the round, I think he got the most out of his round today.”

Billy Ray Brown – “He got a couple of good breaks down the stretch, and he took full advantage of them today.”

Wadkins – “For him to win tomorrow, he is going to have to be sharper tomorrow than he was today. A lot of things went his way today. A lot of poor shots turned out pretty well, and that doesn’t happen very often around here.”

On Bernhard Langer, T2 at 7-under par (1-over par 73 on Saturday)

Rich Lerner – “Still fit and focused.”

Wadkins – “He has struggled with the long putter today getting the pace correct with this wind. He is not the only one who has struggled on the greens today.”

John Mahaffey – “Unbelievable. Only three birdies on this hole all day (17), and here comes Langer from 75 feet.”

Wadkins – “That was definitely the steal of the day.”

On Tom Watson. T6 at 6-under par (1-over 73 on Saturday)

Mahaffey – “He just gets rejuvenated when he comes over here to play links golf.”

Wadkins – “He is ageless”

Wadkins – “I like what I’m seeing with the putter from Tom. This is circa 1982 from Tom Watson, the way he is rolling it this week.”

Lerner – “His touch from long range has been superb.”

Mahaffey – “Had it to 10-under at one point, but the howling winds took their tool.”

On Stephen Ames, T2 at 7-under par (2-over 74 on Saturday)

Brown – “Stephen asked me back in the fairway if he could borrow a little weight from me so he can stay still on the greens, the wind is blowing so hard.”

Wadkins – “Hadn’t been his best day but he has fought hard at times and really hung right in there today.”

On Saturday’s Round 3 at the Senior Open and the windy conditions

Lerner – “In these conditions, it is as much about attitude as it is about skill.”

Lerner – “We have had a little bit of everything today weather-wise. You don’t have a choice, you take and accept what Mother Nature delivers here.

Wadkins – “Mother Nature is undefeated here at St Andrews.”

Lerner – “We always watch golf at St Andrews, but when Tom Watson, at 68, is in the lead or on the leaderboard, it is must watch.”

Brown – “The mindset of the players as they went to the outward half today playing downwind, compared to when they came back in is a totally different mindset. You were trying to make some birdies early on, and now it is just try to hold on and make pars down the stretch.”

John Cook – “Just have to survive coming in.”

Lerner – “St. Andrews is all you can handle on the second nine.”

Lerner – “In playing in elements like this, every facet of your game is tested. Patience, creativity. It is a different ballgame over here.”

Lerner – “First 7 or 8 holes, you can get after it. After that, hang on. Coming home is no picnic.”
