On Round 2 at the Senior Open

Rich Lerner – “For most of the field, this will likely be the last competitive go at perhaps the most significant course in the sport. A victory here at any age is extra special.

Lanny Wadkins – It was nice and calm, a nice, balmy day. All of a sudden it was like a jackhammer hit here. The winds picked up. It is howling out here this afternoon.

Wadkins – “The guys are going to finish at 9 or later tonight and then get up early tomorrow morning. They are going to have a lot of patience this weekend.”

Jeff Sluman, 8-under par after two rounds (currently in 2nd, 4-under 68 on Friday) speaking with Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis following his round

Jeff Sluman: “Obviously I made some putts. Everybody has got the same game plan out here, stay out of the fairway bunkers. Overall I kept the ball in the right spots. Even if you are 50-60 yards offline on the fairway, sometimes that is the best spot.”

Sluman – “I’m not a very good mudder, I can tell you. You just try to persevere. Last year we had some horrific weather over in Wales. You just take every shot as what’s in front of you. You can’t hit perfect shots over here, you can’t try and play that way. It’s much different than in the U.S. You just have to accept some strange bounces at times too.”

On Vijay Singh, currently T3 at 7-under par (3-under 69 on Friday)

Billy Ray Brown – “He has been very aggressive today. He has been dialed in.”

Wadkins – “I think he is playing with as much confidence as we’ve seen.”

On Colin Montgomerie, currently T14 at 5-under (4-under 68 on Friday)

Rich Lerner – “Monty in the mix at the Old Course at St Andrews. The crowds here love it”

Lanny Wadkins – “His game is built on consistency. He drives the ball very straight. High quality iron player and always a good putter. No real weaknesses in Monty’s game.”

On Tom Watson, currently T8 at 6-under (3-under for the day – through 13)

Wadkins – “The one thing about Tom Watson, if you watch his swing, it always looks the same. I think it is because his tempo always looks the same. You can attribute that to his footwork. Probably the best in the business that we’ve seen, going back a long time. His footwork hasn’t changed since he was a teenager.

On Bernhard Langer, currently T3 at 7-under (2-under for the day

Wadkins – “He works very hard at his craft. He is in great shape physically. I can’t think of a major ailment he has had that has slowed him down.”
