NBC SPORTS BAY AREA, PROVIDENT CREDIT UNION ANNOUNCE WINNER OF “2018 ALL-STAR TEACHER AWARD”

 Cori Starr of Northgate High School in Walnut Creek Named 2018 All-Star Teacher,

$20,000 Check Presented in Her Honor

Each All-Star Teacher Award Runner-Up to Receive $2,000 for His/Her School

Program Has Donated $200,000 to Local Public Schools Since Inception in 2007

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – June 21, 2018 – NBC Sports Bay Area (@NBCSAuthentic) announced today that Cori Starr of Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, Calif. is the winner of the 2018 All-Star Teacher Award, presented by Provident Credit Union (@ProvidentCU).  Starr has been awarded $20,000 for her school.  In addition, each All-Star Teacher Award runner-up will receive $2,000 for his/her school.

In its 12th year, the All-Star Teacher Award recognizes middle and high school teachers in Northern and Central California for their extraordinary dedication to their students and significant presence within their communities.  An esteemed panel of judges selected this year’s finalists based on four categories: Overall Commitment; Excellence in Teaching; Rapport with Students; and Level of Distinction.  This year’s five finalists are: Craig Bryant of Albany High School (Albany), Jennifer Click of Edison High School (Fresno), Sergio Hernandez of Katherine R. Smith Elementary (San Jose), Michael Ruibal of Black Diamond Continuation High School (Pittsburg) and 2018 All-Star Teacher Cori Starr of Northgate High School (Walnut Creek)

Since its inception in 2007, the All-Star Teacher Award program has donated $20,000 to public schools in Northern and Central California.  For the eighth straight year, NBC Sports Bay Area has teamed up with Provident Credit Union to award the winning teacher’s school $20,000, up from $10,000 in past years.

This year’s elite panel of judges consists of Doug Bartlett, Senior Marketing Director, BART; Benito Delgado-Olson, Executive Director and Founder, K to College; John Haggarty, VP Marketing of Provident Credit Union;  Lorena Hernandez, Director of Community Investment, Comcast California; Detra Paige, Director of Community Relations, Oakland Athletics;  and Sue Petersen, Executive Director of the Giants Community Fund.
