MICHAELS & COLLINSWORTH AT THE SUPER BOWL
When NBC broadcasts the Super Bowl LII on February 4 in Minneapolis, Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth will call their third Super Bowl together. Their first Super Bowl call was Super Bowl XLVI on NBC in February 2012, which was the most viewed program in U.S. television history at the time. Then in February 2015, they called Super Bowl XLIX, the thrilling four-point New England Patriots victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the most-watched show in U.S. TV history (average of 114.4 million viewers).
For Michaels, who has been called “TV’s best play-by-play announcer” by the Associated Press, this marks his 10th Super Bowl and his fourth for NBC. With Super Bowl LII Michaels will become only the second television commentator to earn 10 Super Bowl play-by-play assignments – joining former CBS and FOX announcer Pat Summerall (11).
In addition, Michaels’ call of this year’s NFL title game will come nearly 30 years to the day since his first Super Bowl play-by-play assignment on ABC’s broadcast of the Washington Redskins’ historic 42-10 Super Bowl XXII victory over the Denver Broncos on Jan. 31, 1988. Michaels is the only TV commentator with a Super Bowl play-by-play run of three decades.
For Collinsworth, the most honored studio analyst in sports television, this is his fourth time calling a Super Bowl. He previously called Super Bowl XXXIX for Fox in a three-man booth with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. Collinsworth also played in two Super Bowls as a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals (XVI, XXIII).
