NBC SPORTS’ AL MICHAELS TO CALL HIS 10TH SUPER BOWL ONE MONTH FROM TODAY, JOINING PAT SUMMERALL AS ONLY TV PLAY-BY-PLAY VOICES FOR 10 SUPER BOWLS

Michaels Called His First Super Bowl 30 Years Ago, Marking Longest Super Bowl Play-by-Play Run in TV History

“People always strive for perfection, but perfect is not attainable…Al Michaels gets as close as anyone I’ve ever known.” – John Madden

STAMFORD, Conn. – January 4, 2018 – Exactly one month from today, Al Michaels, one of history’s most renowned broadcasters whose voice is synonymous with the biggest events, will call Super Bowl LII on NBC on Feb. 4.

With his NBC game call next month alongside Cris Collinsworth from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Michaels will become only the second television commentator to earn 10 Super Bowl play-by-play assignments joining former CBS and FOX announcer Pat Summerall (11).

In addition, Michaels’ call of this year’s NFL title game will come nearly 30 years to the day since his first Super Bowl play-by-play assignment on ABC’s broadcast of the Washington Redskins’ historic 42-10 Super Bowl XXII victory over the Denver Broncos on Jan. 31, 1988. Michaels is the only TV commentator with a Super Bowl play-by-play run of three decades.

Pro Football Hall of Famers Dan Dierdorf and Frank Gifford joined Michaels in the ABC booth in San Diego for his first Super Bowl telecast. This will be Michaels’ fourth Super Bowl with NBC.

Pro Football Hall of Fame coach John Madden called three Super Bowls as an analyst alongside Michaels and eight with Summerall.

“As an analyst, I was extremely fortunate to have two partners like Pat and Al,” said Madden, who also won Super Bowl XI as head coach of the Oakland Raiders. “The only play-by-play announcers to call 10 Super Bowls. You can’t get any luckier than that.

“People always strive for perfection, but perfect is not attainable. However, Al Michaels gets as close as anyone I’ve ever known. We had seven great years together and I enjoyed every second of them on and off the air.”

Michaels recently completed his record 32nd campaign as the play-by-play announcer of the NFL’s premier primetime package, including the last 12 seasons as the voice of NBC Sunday Night Football.

The 2017 NFL season recently concluded with SNF again ranking as primetime television’s #1 show. NBC Sunday Night Football is on pace to rank as TV’s #1 primetime show for the full (Sept.-May) television season for the seventh year in a row – making SNF the first and only primetime show to rank #1 for seven consecutive years (breaking its tie with American Idol).

NBC’s NFL coverage continues this Saturday, January 6, with an NFL Wild Card matchup as the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons visit the NFC West champion Los Angeles Rams. Coverage begins with Football Night in America at 7:30 p.m. ET.
