On Thursday’s Day 1 Foursomes Matches
David Duval – “My head is still spinning from it all today. All in all, not an entirely disappointing day for the International team considering how it looked early. It looked like it could have been a disastrous opening session for the International team through 10 holes today. Maybe you give them a fighters’ chance at this point but it did not look good early.”

Brandel Chamblee – “The average world rank for the United States is 15. The average world rank for the International team is 32. The 15th ranked player is Paul Casey. The 32nd ranked player is Xander Schauffele. Can Schauffele beat Paul Casey? I think he can. We just saw it. He can. So we are talking about 1 guy finding form, changing his mindset for one week. But to get 12 players to find form and change their mindset collectively as a group. That is the task that Nick Price is beset with. It is almost an impossible task to ask his team to beat the United States.”

Phil Mickelson and Kevin Kisner speaking the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis following their match

Phil Mickelson – “It was interesting. We played some good golf. We were 4-under through 10 in some difficult conditions and we were only 1-up. They had a stretch where they won four holes. It was a back-and-forth. Too bad we both bogeyed the last hole because we had some good golf going today.”

Kevin Kisner – “Having him [Mickelson] as my partner in my first Presidents Cup is something that I will always remember. He was the epitome of class in a partner and I just can’t thank him enough. He carried me all day.”

Jason Day and Marc Leishman speaking with Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte following their match

Jason Day – “It was an up and down day. It was going back and forth. Obviously the half is better than the outcome where Phil could have had that putt to win. Marc played some good golf today. He putted spectacular. It is tough. The wind was really difficult. We just have to pick ourselves up and get it going tomorrow.”

Marc Leishman – Towards the end, it was about as intense as it can get. You’ve got all of your teammates there, and all of the American guys. Obviously it is disappointing, but the half point could be very important by the end of the week.”

Day – “A half point is better than none.”

On the U.S. Team
Brandel Chamblee – “The whole U.S. team is just brilliant around the greens.”

Rich Lerner – “The 12 stars in stripes will take the ferry back to the big city, knowing this is their town, their turf, their country.”

On the International Team
Chamblee – “Adam Scott has turned his putting around quite a bit since the anchoring ban went into effect.”

Chamblee – “Just looking at it on paper, the Internationals have their best putter in Adam Hadwin, and they sat him, and you put your worst putter out in foursomes. It seems to me a bit of a question mark.”

Duval – “Certainly in foursomes you’ve got to have your putters out there. To put somebody out inexperienced who ranks overall third worst on the PGA TOUR in the overall category, and especially as a putter, it doesn’t make sense to me either. We’ve got to go back to the fact that we don’t know what is going on behind closed doors. We don’t know what they’ve talked about and  what they’ve seen in practice. But I question this as well.”

Duval – “They need to get out quick tomorrow.”
