NOTABLE QUOTES: GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP (SATURDAY, PRIMETIME)

Notable Quotes – 99th PGA Championship
Golf Central Live From the PGA Championship (Saturday, Primetime)
August 12, 2017
Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, N.C.

On Saturday’s 3rd Round
Frank Nobilo – “In amongst the top 15 players, there is one major championship. And that’s Oosthuizen. The odds are in favor of the other 14 guys to be a first-time major winner.”
Brandel Chamblee – “It was a Saturday that felt like a Sunday… Outside of Carnoustie in 1999, this felt like the toughest major championship that I have seen since going back to the seventies. Nothing like the major championships we have seen as of late.”
David Duval – “Once [the leaders] got to 16, seems like the wheels came off for everybody and the Green Mile showed itself.”
Nobilo – “They’ve got to put a Pennzoil station on 16 tee because people leak oil on the way in.”

On Kevin Kisner (7-under, 1st)
Nobilo – “He should be leading by five shots. Yesterday he got stung by the bad weather. So now when he puts his head on the pillow, does he feel okay about the position, or does he all of a sudden feel like I could have had that [larger] lead?... Matsuyama hasn’t played close to Kisner. Chris Stroud either.”
Chamblee – “He’s not leaning on any one particular part of his game.”

On Hideki Matsuyama (6-under, T-2nd)
Chamblee – “What does Hideki need to do tomorrow? Maybe nothing. Maybe what he shot today will get it done. That final group today shot 9-over par. Just the fact that he’s doing something he’s never done before, same with Kevin Kisner, that is enough in itself to govern these players. That and the golf course.”

On Chris Stroud (6-under, T-2nd)
Duval – “We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘playing with house money.’ I think it’s pretty apt to put on him right now, and he recognizes that. He’s as free and as loose as you can potentially be, and you see the results of it. He’s somebody you better watch tomorrow.”
Chamblee – “He’s 203rd in the world, and he sounds like he’s fifth in the world. To watch him sort of plot his way around has been very impressive.”
Nobilo – “If you don’t have any demons, it’s like no brake. You can just push the accelerator down. Somebody has to win. And somebody has to free it up over those last three or four holes.”

On Justin Thomas (5-under, T-4th)
Chamblee – “He gets every inch out of his tee shots. I think psychologically he’s in the best position to win this championship tomorrow. Kevin Kisner has got to hit fairways. Chris Stroud, this is a really new situation. Hideki Matsuyama will have all the pressure of the country he is from on his shoulders. Not only will Justin Thomas be playing with a chaser’s freedom, he’s also had a marvelous year. Beyond that, he is statistically the best putter on the PGA TOUR and he hits lots of high iron shots. You put all those together, in an odd way he’s two back, but he’s the favorite.”
Duval – “There’s no reason when you look at the leaderboard not to pick him [to win]. It seems mentally he’s where he needs to be.”
