New Season, Newly Promoted Teams: Newcastle United

First match: Newcastle United v. Tottenham Hotspur, Sun., August 13, 8:30 a.m. ET on NBCSN

After finishing 18th in the 2015-16 Premier League season, Newcastle United won the Championship last season, earning automatic promotion to the 2017-18 Premier League. It was the 21st time that a team has been relegated and then immediately promoted back to the Premier League the following season. After a slow start last season, the Magpies bounced back to win a league-high 29 matches, surpassing Brighton & Hove Albion for the league title on the final day of the season.

The club is located in Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England. Newcastle United are widely considered a sleeping giant of English soccer, an always-dangerous side with a huge fan base that have been a constant in the top two divisions for 124 years.
