Last night, NBC Sports Digital was named “Best in Digital Sports Media” by the SportsBusiness Journal at the publication’s annual Sports Business Awards, held at the Marriott Marquis in New York, N.Y.

NBC Sports Digital had its best year ever, highlighted by the 2016 Rio Olympics, which became the biggest digital event in history with 3.3 billion streaming minutes consumed, 2.71 billion live minutes, and 100 million unique users. Within the calendar year, NBC Sports Digital also re-branded the NBC Sports app (previously NBC Sports Live Extra); launched Playmaker Media, an end-to-end streaming service; purchased youth sports platform SportsEngine; launched NBC SPORTS SCORES, a personalized scores app; launched NBC Sports Gold, the company’s direct-to-consumer product for highly avid audiences; and debuted streaming of local NBA, NHL and MLB games for its Regional Sports Networks. Last year, NBC Sports Digital streamed more than 10,000 events, and provided digitally-exclusive content and shows.

“It was an honor to be recognized as Best in Sports Digital at the Sports Business Awards,” said Rick Cordella, EVP and GM, Digital Media, NBC Sports Group. “We’re incredibly lucky to have such great properties to stream, promote, and cover. The success we’ve experienced this past year is a testament to our phenomenal, hard-working digital team.”

NBC Sports Digital’s portfolio of sites delivered more than 5.5 billion page views in 2016, hitting more than 4 billion for the fourth consecutive year, and surpassing 5 billion for the second year in a row. The NBC Sports app surpassed 26 million app downloads, streamed more than 106 million hours, and registered 6.4 billion minutes, up 237% over 2015 (1.9 billion). In addition, Golf Channel’s suite of digital products engaged golfers more than 50 million times across GolfNow, Golf Advisor and Golf Channel Academy.

This was the second win for NBC Sports Digital, having also won in 2014. Also nominated in the category were ESPN Digital Media, Facebook, MLB Advanced Media, National Football League, and Twitter. NBC Sports Group also won the category “Best in Sports Media.”
