STAMFORD, Conn. – May 1, 2017Alex Ovechkin and the (1) Washington Capitals find themselves in a near must-win situation in Game 3 of their second-round series against Sidney Crosby and the (2) Pittsburgh Penguins tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, with Pittsburgh leading the series 2-0. Pre-game coverage begins with NHL Live at 6:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

Four-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick (play-by-play), U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk (analyst), and Emmy Award-winner Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass analyst) will call Capitals-Penguins from PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. Liam McHugh anchors studio coverage on NHL Live alongside analysts and former players Mike Milbury and Keith Jones.

(1) WASHINGTON CAPITALS AT (2) PITTSBURGH PENGUINS – GAME 3 AT 7:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN – PENGUINS LEAD 2-0

Pittsburgh took a 2-0 series lead with a 6-2 victory in Game 2 in Washington on Saturday night. Phil Kessel and Jake Guentzel each scored twice, while Sidney Crosby added two assists, and Caps netminder Braden Holtby was pulled after the second period.

Crosby has recorded 11 points (4g/7a) in seven games in the postseason, and has posted two goals and two assists in the first two games of this series. Alex Ovechkin scored in Game 1, and added a pair of assists in Washington’s Game 2 loss. In 15 head-to-head playoff games, Ovechkin has recorded 25 points (11g/14a), while Crosby has recorded 19 points (10g/9a). Crosby’s Penguins have won the two previous series (2009 and 2016).

The series now shifts to Pittsburgh where the Penguins have gone 3-0 in the postseason, and 31-6-4 in the regular season. The Capitals are 1-5 all-time when trailing a series 2-0, and last won a playoff series in this circumstance in 2009, when they defeated the Rangers.

STRONG SECOND-ROUND RATINGS CONTINUE THROUGH WEEKEND

This past weekend’s coverage on NBC and NBCSN continued the trend of strong ratings to begin the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Saturday night’s Penguins-Capitals Game 2 on NBC led the way with a 1.85 overnight rating, followed by Sunday afternoon Blues-Predators Game 3 on NBC (1.31 overnight rating), and Saturday’s double-overtime Game 2 thriller between the Rangers and Senators (1.27 overnight rating).

In all of those games, NBC was the top network in the local U.S. market during the game, and Nashville set a record with its highest-rated Predators game ever on NBC (9.9 local rating).

2017 IIHF WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP COVERAGE BEGINS FRIDAY ON NBCSN

NBC Sports Group begins its coverage of the 2017 IIHF World Hockey Championship this week from Cologne, Germany, and Paris, France, marking the seventh consecutive year covering international hockey’s premier annual tournament.

Highlights of Team USA’s schedule includes a live presentation of its clash with Russia on Tuesday, May 16, at 10:15 a.m. ET on NBCSN to close out the preliminary round.
